I approached this album with some trepidation following the disappointment of Gothic Road. It purports to have been written in German hotel rooms (really an 8-track mini-album really given 1 track of 10 follows Jackie's peculiar habit of giving a track over to another artist, and another of Michael Cosgrove reciting a list of odd band names). Oh-oh, this did not bode too well and I feared an offhand knock-off.
Happily, I can report that this album, if not quite a classic, has enough charming observation to demonstrate Jackie is still a vital creative force, imaginatively illuminating remembered details.
The album benefits from a simple arrangement of Jackies voice and guitar and Michael's keyboard.
My heartwarming highlight was 'To Live And Die In Levenland', where Jackie expresses the wish to be buried "in Frankfurt's Gothic cemetery/The one across the road from the Holiday Inn/so i can hear the people checking in/so i can hear the elevator whistlin by/A little tune playing as it touched the sky/So I can hear the people in the lobby bar/First drink after parking the car...[organ]And then the sun came out and bath-ed me/ in William Blake's eternity".
It begs the question, if these songs were written in hotel rooms, Jackie hopefully has more good 'uns written elsewhere. I look forward to those, relieved and reassured that on this evidence, Jackie's back on track. Hurrah!
