'It's a book full of pleasures, and shows, as always, a mind turned alluringly outwards, into the world.' --Philip Hensher, Daily Telegraph

'These always absorbing essays seek out the things that matter deeply to this most English of poets and holds them up again to the light.'

This is a beautiful collection, owing largely to Motion's wonderful prose. He writes eloquently and movingly about people, places and works of art but the book also invites the reader to explore his own writings further, both his poetry, especially the delightful Cinder Path collection and his memoirs. Motion's writing deserves one day to be praised as eloquently as he praises the work of others.

Revaluation of Neglected Writers and Topics (A. Motion's "Ways of Life" 27 Mar 2009
By Kazuko Iki - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I find "Ways of Life" by Andrew Motion fascinating as well as edifying especially because it gives just evaluations of hithertto rather undervalued writers such as John Clare, William Barnes and Ivor Garney. My pleasant suprise is that the Poet Laureate has superb expertise of painters and paintings. I can say that I enjoyed the section 'Painters' best of all. Except for 'Sailing to Italy', every article was new to me.
