5.0 out of 5 stars Pychedelics 19 Dec 2006
By Mr T VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
No Way Out is a prime example of late sixties psychedelic. Tracks like In the Midnight Hour and Misty Lane are simply `poptastic', a wonderful listen if you're into retro kitch. But you get the feeling that such songs are concessions to the contemporary market. The band themselves would most likely rather be playing blues-influenced, Stones-esque numbers like Let's Talk about Girls and Sweet Young Thing. They do both styles very well and the combination would be enough to satisfy most listeners, but there's more. The title track and the infamous Are You Gonna be There (at the Love In), to name but a couple, nudge the album toward the genre in which it most happily sits: garage psych. And that, for most, is the end of the story: the Chocolate Watch Band were a talented but under-appreciated psych band that started off as Stones emulators and went on to record a first-rate underground album, marred only by a few `sell-out' tracks. I disagree! The pop tunes are excellent in their own right. And there's an aspect to No Way Out that is totally ignored by such received wisdom. There's another weirder, and altogether darker side to the album, present in experimental pieces like Gossamer Wings, Expo 2000 and - best of all - Dark Side of the Mushroom. This for me, and for many now just discovering the Chocolate Watch Band, is the interesting stuff. Apparently it was notoriously difficult to reproduce live and thus was considered by the fans to be `not really the Watch Band' but rather some unholy, studio-born evil twin. I say, nonsense to that. No Way Out is a psychedelic classic. No matter what species of that particular musical genre you prefer, it's well worth a purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep the 18th Amendment 4 Feb 2005
By Johnny Heering - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Chocolate Watchband was one of the greatest unknown bands of the 1960s. They had no hits, but they managaged to release a lot of great music. They had a garage band feel, with a singer who sounded like Mick Jagger. This was their first album, which was produced by Ed Cobb, who is best known for producing those great songs by the Standells. But I guess Mr. Cobb didn't have much faith in the Chocolate Watchband, because he replaced lead singer Dave Aguilar's vocals with black session singer Don Bennett on some songs. And he added two psychedlic instrumentals that didn't actually feature the Chocolate Watchband at all. But amazingly enough, the album actually turned out pretty well. It may not be the album the group wanted, but it is still a good listen. The CD features three bonus tracks. The alternate version of Wilson Pickett's "In The Midnight Hour" features Dave Aguilar's original vocal, before it was replaced by Don Bennett's voice. "Milk Cow Blues" is a Kinks-like version of an old Elvis song, which was unreleased until the 1980s. And "Psychedelic Trip" is a previously unreleased early version of "No Way Out". If you are a fan of "Nuggets" type music, you should enjoy this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chocolate Watchband - 'No Way Out' (Sundazed) 21 May 2006
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Originally released in 1967,as this was the band's debut lp.About as good as their second and third albums,'The Inner Mystique'('68)and 'One Step Beyond'('69),see my reviews of both.Good job on the CD reissue,as you get three bonus tracks.Very nice.If you're a Stones fan, you're sure to enjoy this vintage garage rock&roll title.Best cuts are "Let's Talk About Girls",the instrumental "Dark Side Of The Mushroom","Are You Gonna Be There(At The Love-In)" and the title track "No Way Out".Also dug the two versions of "In The Midnight Hour" and "Psychedelic Trip".One of rock's TRUE under appreciated/lesser known bands.Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great example of late 60s psychedelia and garage rock 14 Feb 2004
By Home Cinema - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I admit that I was attracted mainly by its great LP cover. It is at least 2 stars in my rating. But the music is good, too. Let's talk about girls sounds close to Moby Grape on their first album and it rocks. The other songs vary between psychedelic floating sounds and bone dry garage rock. I personally like this mixture very much. Give it a try - if you liked Moby Grape then you'll like the CWB as well. Also worth seaking out: The Inner Mystique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 2012 re-release from Sundazed 2 Mar 2012
By Stephen B. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This review is for the new 2012 Sundazed re-release of "No Way Out" by the Chocolate Watch Band.

The remaster is surprisingly good, even given the fact they were more or less a garage band and even when listening with an audiophil approach. I don't have the older Sundazed version from 1994, but this new one is really pretty good. Playtime is rather short, but I'm glad getting the original album sounding like this, so no bonus tracks required.
The disc itself is of good manufacturing quality (unfortunately that's not a matter of course nowadays) and it comes in a nicely styled foldout digipak.
And, yes, thanks Sundazed for listening to what your customers say, the CD is being held in place by a glued-in plastic tray so the disc won't suffer any scratches from handling. No more stupid inserting the disc in a cardboard only packaging - great! This is what collectors like.

After listening to this one I have ordered the other new Sundazed re-release by the Chocolate Watch Band "Inner Mystique" right away. I presume it will be equally good.

Sundazed, keep the good ones comming!

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars garage psycher. 20 Aug 2011
By Michael Dobey - Published on Amazon.com
Are you gonna be there at the love iN? , the bands fm radio hit, is completely the late sixties silliness completely as most people never went to a orgy even in the much Wilder seventies. Still this is first rate psych rock and garage mixture.
Some songs are pure spaceout and they were added and forced on the band by the band's management! but they are good psych rock instrumentals all the way. I don't know if the band played them live they are more like pink floyd than the rest of the disc which is garage rock with a tinge of psych. garage rock was the inspiration of punk but often the musicians of garage rock were better than the later punk scenes and the garage rock scene was the 60's all the way anyways. The vocalist sounds like mick jagger to a degree and that's where the true roots of this band are in blues driven garage music and not psych rock like pink floyd. So if you love garage rock by a group that was great at it then this one is for you.
