Product Description

A British acoustic roots band and true live favourites on the scene, Hatful Of Rain s music is steeped in the fiddle tunes and old-time ballads of the Appalachian mountains. Led by the wonderfully poignant and beautifully crafted voice of Chloe Overton, they bring together instrumental virtuosity, soaring harmonies, intense performances and an incredibly authentic writing style. The whole band display prodigious talent, but a highlight of the band s virtuosity is James Shenton's fiddle one the UK s foremost classical violinists he s played with everyone from the Balanescu Quartet to the London Symphony Orchestra. Way Up On The Hill is sublime bluegrass-influenced offering underpinned with an acute British folk heritage that shines through these original compositions. These are songs with a heartfelt, well-worn feel; tales of murder, ballads of love and loss, and uptempo numbers with exciting interplay between mandolin and fiddle. Three part vocal harmonies delight on many a chorus, a core part of the Hatful sound.

I had never heard of this group until I saw them at Bournemouth Folk club and was blown away with their music. Chloe has a brilliant voice and the rest aren't shabby either. The instrument playing and harmonies are great. Well worth buying.

This album is full of great Bluegrass and Americana music, my favourite track is Winter Rose and every time I hear this played live or on the album it never fails to move me.
This band is doing really well and they deserve all their success.

James on great fiddle
Chloes's beautiful voice
Phil on fine double bass
Fred on magnificent mandolin.

The album is really worth a listen and some tracks are self penned. Great suff.

Bob Harris of Radio Two is a fan and you will hear their session on his country radio programme on March 24. You heard it hear first.

The Title Track - Way up on the Hill - is very evocative with Chloes wonderful voice and haunting fiddle played by James.

So if you love to hear great instrumentals and vocals don't delay - I recommend that you buy this album.

Hatful of Rain's debut album is the perfect blend of American Bluegrass and British folk, authentic enough that this Bluegrass-region dweller assumed for a bit that they were only from a town over rather than an entire ocean. First, the album has the celebratory feel of music played at a gathering of close-knit friends, particularly the pure instrumental pieces ("Trafalgar Road" and "Jerusalem Tart" are standouts); I think I even heard the sound of some clogging in the background on one piece.

But the real gems (at least for this listener) are "The Exit Song" and "Way Up on the Hill" with their haunting, lovely lyrics and beautiful vocals by lead singer Chloe Overton. "Way Up on the Hill" immediately went on my "favorites" playlist and hasn't moved since. (Don't miss the video of "The Exit Song" on YouTube.)

It's rare to see such a rich blend of gentle and smart songwriting, masterful instrument work (the fiddling and banjo playing is particularly good), and music with such an open and authentic feel. Bluegrass and folk lovers, enjoy.

The Internet is a wonderful thing. Without YouTube, this little gem of an album would have remained undiscovered.

A fusion of British folk and Appalachian Bluegrass, this is a winning collection of largely self-penned songs in contrasting moods and tempos. The musicianship is scintillating, and in Chole Overton the band is blessed with a singer with a fine voice.

The album opens brilliantly with the mesmerising title track, a beautiful song that showcases Chloe's shimmering vocals; in the days before downloading individual tracks became commonplace, this song alone would have merited buying the whole album. I absolutely love it! Strawberry Leaves is an uptempo Bluegrass tune, before the mood turns melancholy with the wistful Winter Rose. Trafalgar Road is a dazzling instrumental that leads nicely into another terrific up tempo number, No Return. Whiskey is the best of the country-style tracks. Jerusalem Tart is the second instrumental, no less dazzling than the first. The album concludes with a fabulous version of Angelina Baker.

I feel a little churlish for withholding a star, but I'm not keen on Welcome to the Family and Rockin' Chair Daddy. Minor quibbles aside, this album is certainly worth exploring.
