(The Book Bag )
'This story is truly inspirational but also accessible and deals with the harsh reality of life with cancer in straight forward way.'
(Write Away )'Nicole's inspirational story will leave anyone who reads it in utter awe of her selflessness, sense of humour and incredibly positive outlook in the face of such immense and extreme obstacles.'
(Waterstones Books Quarterly )At the age of 11, Nicole Dryburgh was diagnosed with a malignant tumour on her spine. After an operation to remove the tumour, followed by an intensive course of radiotherapy, Nicole's life returned to normal and the doctors were pleased with her progress.
Two years later, aged 13, Nicole suffered a brain haemorrhage. Desperately ill, blind and unable to move, she was given weeks to live. Against all odds, she came home.
Aged 18, blind and mainly confined to a wheelchair, Nicole is wholehearted and positive, whether she is studying, fund-raising, horse-riding, playing with her mischievous dogs or hanging out with her friends. Moving, inspiring, funny, unforgettable - Nicole's is a moving story of refusal to give up hope.

unforgettable and un-put-downable,
By Polly Liberton (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Way I See it (Paperback)
This teenage author tells her extraordinary story with total honesty. It doesn't always make easy reading - she's writing about fighting for her life, after all - but it is totally gripping, sometimes sad, often funny and always full of surprises.
One of the powerful elements of the book is the way it shows a family and community rallying round to help Nicole and her amazing mother and brother cope with a desperate situation. There's nothing 'poor me' about this story - or anybody in it. Nicole and her family and helpers and carers are so busy that there's no room for anything like self-pity. I'd defy anybody to read it and not to feel different about life by the end.

A compelling and uplifting read,

This review is from: The Way I See it (Paperback)
If you are able-bodied with none of your senses impaired, can you imagine what it would feel like suddenly to become blind and partially paralysed, in addition to having an inoperable spinal tumour. What would you do? Give up... or fight?
If you want to be inspired about how you might live life to the full in whatever circumstances you find yourself, you need to read Nicole's story. On its own, the story of Nicole's courage and determination to defy the odds over the past seven years in the face of spinal cancer, which has left her blind and disabled, would be inspiring enough. Yet, interwoven with this is her determination to live her life as fully as possible in the circumstances in which she finds herself. Her style is open, honest and engaging. Sometimes sad and sometimes funny, it will give you an insight into the way a teenager sees life... but with a difference. Whatever age you are you will find something special in this book.

when a person is fighting against the odds, it builds a persons character, and this certainly comes through in the book. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and left me wondering how much bad luck life is going to throw at this amazing person!!!! Anyone, teenager to adult should read this book. If you think life is hard, read this. It could change your mind. Very humbling!!!!!! I hope that there will be a follow-up as would love to know what happens to Nicole.
