Listen to it then try and tell convince your self it was released in 1998. It sounds more like an ageless release from the seventies. Its charm for me was its low-fi production. Something that was hinted at on ‘Not in my airforce’ but never really used to it’s full potential, the same has to go for the song writing, this is a wonderfully poetic album, perfectly sung and touching on punk, acoustic and of course your soul. Highlights for me where, ‘Subspace Biographies’ with its poetic lyrics and its hint of punk. ‘Caught Waves Again’ with its perfectly sung hook line ‘I think I’m catching waves again’. ‘People Are Leaving’ for just trying to run two different sets of vocals at the same time on top of each other, and finally ‘Rumblin joker’ a master piece of lyrics. I don’t know where Robert Pollard came from but I’m glad he’s here.

I actually prefer the predecessor Not in my airforce - i think it has more good songs on than this one does - although it worth buying just for Subspace biographies.

This album ,as does Not in my airforce, find its way back to the early days of GBV - skethcy songs, short, full of mistakes and oddities but inanely catchy.

This is album is clearer than others in its sound, it is also quite gentle compared to others apart from the grinding 'steeple of knives' - the songs are more 'complete' but it doesnt seem to as engage as well in the way GBV/Pollard should.

It is a little experimental in its approach - as the reviewer stated - one track has two sets of vocals layered over each other - interesting but by no means the best example of what robert pollard can do.

Throughout the tracks - a GBV/pollard fan notice a more sombre tone to the recordings - most are as cryptic and surreal as ever, and as always also bordering on the line of 'is this beautiful or just sheer oddity'....

Fans of GBV's later albums which lack the more direct hooks and take a more progressive rock approach will enjoy this, as those with a taste for the unusual! Those who prefer the lo-fi catchy angle of Pollards music may wish to try Not in my air force first .

Although subspace biographies is great song and fine example of his songwriting - great hook, messy guitars and his detached vocals.

all in all its ok - and a pretty avergage example of his songs - which will suit some fans more than others with one clasic pollard track.

Baking Helens Kingdom 3 Jan 2005

Somewhere in the world is a band looking for that perfect hook. I have news for them. Robert Pollard already knows it, played it, and thought of ten more while you were reading this. This man continues to write melodies that are so stunning, it's almost embarrassing. Wow. Buy this album if you want to hear one of the best solo albums of all time.

the best gbv offering to date 22 Oct 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
you won't be dissapointed with this one! another instant classic from mr. pollard and friends, waved out proves that gbv in all its incarnations just gets better and better! at times both inspiring and sobering, mournful and joyful- a record that requires repeat listenings! enjoy!!

Are you into the easy way out? 24 Aug 1998

The lyrics on this one are among Bob's best--surpassed only by Kid Marine. It's a dark album, possibly autobiographical. The recurring theme seems to be fading celebrity. "Waved Out", "People are Leaving", "Artificial Light", "Make Use", "Just Say the Word", "Pick Seeds from My Skull" are the highlights.
