By K. L. Wren HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
I've waited years for a camping innovation such as this Wavebox and it's a brilliant piece of kit well-designed for campers or people on the move, right down to the small coolbag which keeps food cool inside the unit until it's time for cooking.

I use mine in a micro-motorhome but it could equally be used in a car or boat or anywhere on the move. It plugs into a 12v socket (must be rated 20 amp or higher), directly onto a 12v car or leisure battery or will plug into 230v mains for use at home or when camping with an electric hook-up. It's well-designed with long leads to stretch across from the battery/12v socket to a table or other flat surface. Very conveniently, its footprint perfectly matches the dimensions of the chopping board also used as a sink cover in smaller motorhomes so it's easy to use in very confined spaces. Similarly, it will also store away in a locker beneath a bunk.

If using with a 12v socket, be warned that cooking times will be slow - a meal which would take 6 minutes to cook in a standard 800w microwave will take 48 minutes so powering directly from the battery is strongly advised to reduce cooking time to a very acceptable 12 minutes. As there's no turntable, I'd recommend cooking such a meal in 2-3 divided bursts to ensure there are no cold spots. I was cautious at first so checked temperatures via a food thermometer and found my kippers were evenly cooked.

This is a great little invention - it's easy to carry, quite rugged, very portable and means I can self-cater in the middle of nowhere with complete independence. Also, it is just about big enough to warm a SnuggleSafe Bedtime Heat Comfort providing a safe, warm alternative to a hot water bottle on cold nights!

A highly recommended purchase for anyone wanting independence on the move!

Terrible 21 Jun 2011
this product did not deliver what it promised. Unless you would be prepared have to make many amendments. Sounded good to use but did not heat up any food in the car. When pluged in in a normal socket it did work somewhat but the whole point of having a portable microwave is so you could use it travelling.

Smokin'!!! 15 Mar 2009
By Richard Jones - Published on Amazon.com
I have owned my Wavebox since it first became available late 2008. I love this thing but the cigarette lighter cable melted a few weeks later. So, we got in touch with customer service and they said they'd send a new cable right away. It's March 2009 (5 months later) and I still have not received the cable. I have been using the battery clamp in the mean time, with faster heating times so it's been great. I use the microwave every weekday for lunch. Just last week, as my food was cooking, smoke began bellowing out of the cooling fans and it smelled like a circuit board was melting. The unit still works but the amount of smoke it belches out is alarming. Customer service has been contacted once again. This time they have responded better and say a brand new unit is on the way. I hope it's true, they really seem like they want to stand behind their product and it seems so well built to me. Hopefully mine was just a fluke since I can't seem to find any information online of other people's units failing.

Update: after waiting and complaining via email we got a response saying how sorry they are and it's just Tim Frank and his wife trying to make this product happen. They are standing behind the product and really wanting to make things right. I received my brand new wavebox and it works great. It actually works better now that the cooking "rack" is porcelain, allowing a more uniform heating. As a side note, I took my first unit apart and was impressed with the construction of the unit. Hoping that the new unit will provide me with many more hot lunches. I'm trying to change my rating to a higher one but apparently cannot with Amazon.

5 stars for great idea, -4 for not working worth a darn 20 Nov 2010
By JK - Published on Amazon.com
As the other reviewers have noted, this microwave barely works at all. Took 3 presses of the "popcorn" button (18 minutes run time!) to finally get around to cooking a bag of microwave popcorn that my kitchen microwave cooks in under 3 minutes. And that was hooked up to the wall AC. I thought this would be perfect for the RV: under 60 amps draw at 12 volts DC, small, portable, tough. But first it has to work. The only thing it seems to be good at is slowly draining the house battery in the RV. A 600 watt Haier microwave and a 1500 watt inverter work far better and are much cheaper.

DOES NOT work plugged into lighter 26 May 2009
By Ami Boo - Published on Amazon.com
Everything I saw on this shows it working in a cigarette lighter. It's not till you get it that you find out that it will only work on a 20 amp system which no vehicle has. Most all vehicles have a 15 amp system and this will blow out your fuse quicker than you can say, This sucks!

Calling customer service is no help. They don't know anything about the product and they tell you that someone will call back within 24-48 hrs but no one ever calls back at all - even after trying 4 times. I would like to give this product negative 3 stars for false advertising but this system won't let me.
