This book is specifically concerned with the basic electronic and optical properties of two dimensional semiconductor heterostructures based on III-V and II-Vi compounds. It explores various consequences of one-dimensional size-quantization, a genuine quantum-mechanical effect, on the most basic physical properties of heterolayers. The book recalls a few basic quantum mechanical properties of idealized quantum wells and superlattices, and discusses the occurrence of bound states when the heterostructure is imperfect or when it is suffused with near bandgap light. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

First - it is an extremely well written book. In spite of being more than a decade old for a field that is very rapidly evolving, it provides the most comprehensive introduction to the field. The writing is lucid, and the quantum mechanical results are very clearly stated and derived before being used. That is a boon to a graduate student like me, since I can depend on it everytime I need to really understand heterostructure physics. One thing that is sorely missed in the book is an index at the end, which would make it much easier to be used for reference.

We have used this text for our 5th-year undergraduate course in Semiconductor Quantum Heterostructures in Electrical Engineering in Belgrade. The book clearly covers all the theoretical apects of the problem through the full derivations of all needed formulae. However, it lacks the applications, but anyway this is excellent, self contained, comprehensive theoretical intro to the field. Prerequests some standard undergraduate quantm mechanics, solid state physics and electromagnetics.

You don't have to be a theoretical solid state physicist to appreciate this book. Even a mere materials scientist such as myself--with a basic understanding of the time-independent Schroedinger equation--should be able to understand it! Really, it all proceeds from the simple quantum well problems that we have all solved in undergraduate modern physics courses. Write down the Schordinger equation, set the boundary conditions, and then solve the resulting algebraic equations. Okay, it is somewhat more complicated than this--but the author provides you with the physical insight to incorporate quantum well widths or superlattice wavelengths and effective masses in order to calculate band gaps and dispersion relationships. I actually used what I learned from this book to calculate the band gap as a function of superlattice wavelength for a figure in a book chapter that I once wrote--using only a few dozen lines of the primitive programing language BASIC. I should also say that this book is much more than just a book about heterostructures, it is a great way to get your hands dirty with accessible solid state theory and glean an understanding of such things as light and heavy holes.
