5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding 7 April 2006
By J. Frankel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Otis cut his teeth as a bluesman and the blues shine right through on this phenomenal collection. By the time these sides were recorded Mr. O was a 30 year veteran of the music business and was playing r&b to make the $. Johnny and frequently his son, Shuggie, either write, sing, side artist or produce on all 20 some odd glorious tracks. "Watts Breakaway" featuring a tip of the cap to Sly Stone, rates as a gem, as do Preston Love's rare single, "Cool Ade" and a freaky number called "Spells and Incantations" which leads the set. Just about every song here is a bluesy freakout that you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

I once went out of my way to recommend this album to an "associate" at Borders bookstore - that's how good this stuff is.
4.0 out of 5 stars Funky Compilation 5 Mar 2013
By Steve Holtje - Published on Amazon.com

Not an integral album, this compiles a very interesting and super-funky assortment of '70s Los Angeles R&B, with a few well-known tracks but mostly the kind of "finds" that only crate-diggers would know about.
5.0 out of 5 stars Funking Great! 14 Sep 2012

The main review says that these recordings are from the late 60s, but that's not entirely accurate. Yes, there are a handful of tracks on this compilation from the late 60s, but most tunes are from the early to mid 1970s. And indeed, this was a very creative and productive period for Johnny Otis, a music guru who sadly never got the kudos he deserved, considering the enormous contributions he gave to the music business. The amount of talent that he signed, produced, played with, and recorded is very impressive. You won't find one of his most famous finds, Etta James, on here, but there are many "no name" artists who will turn your head --- and ears --- when you hear this CD. Plus, his son Shuggie Otis stars on many tracks, including his famous "Strawberry Letter 23". That track, can also be found on several Shuggie collections and there were a few more songs on here that I had on various Soul compilations, plus "Cool Ade" by Preston Love, from his short but smokin' "Omaha Bar B-Q" album, a set that also featured Shuggie on guitar. Stylistically, this collection covers a wide range of R&B styles from the period: soul, funk, jazz (some fine Vibes playing by Johnny), and blues. You'll find male and female vocalists, hot guitar playing, plus a few instrumentals. A great mix. This is an outstanding compilation of music, plus the liner notes and booklet contain a generous amount of information. Well worth the money for this import disc.
