About the Author

David Howarth, who died in 1991, was one of Britain's best writers of historical events. He himself had worked as war correspondent for the BBC in the Second World War, reporting the chaos of Dunkirk, but with the fall of France he joined the Navy and then came under the command of the SOE (Special Operating Service) running clandestine operations between Shetland and Norway. For this he was awarded the highest honours that Norway could award a foreigner. His own naval experiences in wartime and those in peacetime as an experienced sailor and boatmaker in Shetland, allow him to write with great understanding about a battle amidst the perils of the sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars History just the way I like it! 5 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is so easy to read - it is utterly engrossing and entertaining, but also carefully researched and scholarly. It gives a clear account of the battle in a story-like way, as well as giving hundreds of fascinating vignettes of the people who were there. I would recommend this book to any fan of 19th century military history, and also to fans of Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finest account of Waterloo 28 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
Waterloo was perhaps the first big battle where (some) ordinary troops could write. Howarth puts their snapshots together brilliantly to make a book which remains the classic account. If you go to the Wellington museum in the town of Waterloo this is the one they sell most of - and for good reason.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different view......... 25 Jan 2008
By tygris
Format:Paperback
A small volume that provides a snapshot of personal viewpoints of the battle.

Slightly limited in the view from the French side, and also there is no way of knowing when the recollections were comitted to paper by the individuals concerned, but a fascinating look at the small section of the event as seen by a disparate group of individuals present at the battle.

An adult version of the "My Story" type of books that bring historical events to life for teenaged readers, this book also has the added benefit of a list of sources and references.

Worth a place in any collection of books on the Battle or of the period.
