About the Author

David Howarth, who died in 1991, was one of Britain's best writers of historical events. He himself had worked as war correspondent for the BBC in the Second World War, reporting the chaos of Dunkirk, but with the fall of France he joined the Navy and then came under the command of the SOE (Special Operating Service) running clandestine operations between Shetland and Norway. For this he was awarded the highest honours that Norway could award a foreigner. His own naval experiences in wartime and those in peacetime as an experienced sailor and boatmaker in Shetland, allow him to write with great understanding about a battle amidst the perils of the sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars History just the way I like it! 5 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is so easy to read - it is utterly engrossing and entertaining, but also carefully researched and scholarly. It gives a clear account of the battle in a story-like way, as well as giving hundreds of fascinating vignettes of the people who were there. I would recommend this book to any fan of 19th century military history, and also to fans of Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finest account of Waterloo 28 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
Waterloo was perhaps the first big battle where (some) ordinary troops could write. Howarth puts their snapshots together brilliantly to make a book which remains the classic account. If you go to the Wellington museum in the town of Waterloo this is the one they sell most of - and for good reason.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different view......... 25 Jan 2008
By tygris
Format:Paperback
A small volume that provides a snapshot of personal viewpoints of the battle.

Slightly limited in the view from the French side, and also there is no way of knowing when the recollections were comitted to paper by the individuals concerned, but a fascinating look at the small section of the event as seen by a disparate group of individuals present at the battle.

An adult version of the "My Story" type of books that bring historical events to life for teenaged readers, this book also has the added benefit of a list of sources and references.

Worth a place in any collection of books on the Battle or of the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear explanation of a decisive battle. 5 Jun 2013

Interesting and concise description of the battle. Clearly explained and easily read with good description of key events together with an insight into why events happened as they did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waterloo 20 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
There are so many books about this famous battle , or rather four days and more, especially a few hundred days before the bicentenary.
This is not a recent one but still worthwile to read despite its austere presentation.
As I'm not a specialist I still believe (a part from visiting the battlefield) that to understand well Waterloo the reading of 3 to 5 book about the subject is necessary, and this might be one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read account of one of the great battles 14 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've wanted to learn more about the battle of Waterloo, so when I saw a description of this book saying that it was a good read I decided to buy it. It is, indeed, easy to read, giving background to the battle and then detailing the day's events using a number of personal stories to illustrate the roles and experiences of those taking part in determining the outcome. Not at all a dry read and well worth reading in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waterloo: A Near Run Thing (Great Battles) 12 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
The book was delivered speedily, for which we were very grateful as it was a Christmas present for my husband, who had just finished reading Trafalgar (different author).

My husband has enjoyed the book, but would like to make the observation that the facts were presented in a way that was not quite as easy to remember as in Trafalgar. However, it is still a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A battle to put it down!! 9 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I can only agree with previous reviews that it was lively, interesting but also that for someone like me (who knows very little about the period of conflict) it was thought provoking and proved very difficult to put down.

I can't compare it to other books on the subject but as far as being a good book to read that will give you a great snapshot of the British Army at the time, a good synopsis of the battle and a delve into the minds of the men in the middle of it all then do read it.
