Product Description

Product Description

Histories of the Waterloo campaign and tours of the battlefield generally concentrate on the battle between the armies of Napoleon and Wellington - the role of Blucher's Prussians is left in the background. Peter Hofschoer's fascinating account focuses on the Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo and on their critical but often neglected contribution to the battle. He tells the story of the grueling Prussian advance towards the battlefield and he records the ferocious and decisive fight that broke out when they arrived. At every stage he allows the reader to follow in the footsteps of the Prussian soldiers as they struggled across the Belgian countryside almost 200 years ago.

About the Author

Peter Hofschroer is one of the leading authorities on the Napoleonic Wars. He has made a special study of the role of the German forces and of the Battle of Waterloo. His best-known work is 1815 - The Waterloo Campaign, a ground-breaking re-examination of the culminating event of the Napoleonic era.

The wider perspective 14 May 2009
Format:Paperback
This book, with its siblings, do bring a lot more perspective to Napoleons last great gamble. They certainly highlight how important the Prussian army was in defeating the French. They also leave the reader (or at least me) with a need to find out more. The book could do with more maps as village names are banded around with no clear idea of their relationship to the main towns and villages most interested parties would know. I know the next point is outside the scope of this book but it would be interesting to know the full structure of the Prussian army (the elite units left at home for instance) and the Prussians main German allies and assosiated forces.
I did pick one or two errors in the text but on the whole this book is well worth reading and will certainly make the reader think.

Succinct History of Prussia in the Waterloo Campaign 10 Nov 2011
By Frank - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Excellent, well-written history of Prussian participation in the subject campaign. While reasonably complete and well-written, the volume adds little to any afficianado's understanding. If you follow this stuff well, then this book is filled with reminders, rather than insight. If, on the other hand, you don't know the German role at Waterloo, this volume will be very enlightening. The Prussians played a much greater role than most English histories are willing to acknowledge. Check it out.
