In this age of declining standards in spelling, punctuation and grammar thanks to lacklustre teaching in schools and such things as text messaging, this book reminds us of how our beautiful and ancient language should be used.
For journalists, this is a timeless handbook and it should be re-printed now and forever more.
On top of all that, it is one of the funniest books I have ever read.

I had to re read my treasured dog-eared copy of this classic today on hearing of the death of the greatest newspaper writer of our age. That age being a generation before fake celebrity and free DVDs being given prominence over writing, subbing, informing and entertaining. One day this book will be re-issued and a new generation will learn what it has been missing.

Sex Change Pope in Royal Mercy Dash

How's that for an eyecatching headline? The late Keith Waterhouse (hereafter refrred to as KW) wrote features, articles and columns for the Daily Mirror for many years. His novels, including Billy Liar, have sold throughout the world and many are still in print.

Waterhouse on Newspaper Style was originally written as a guide for Daily Mirror journalists. It has been out of print (and highly sought after) for many years, but now it's back in paperback form. KW was the consummate journalist, and in this book gives useful advice on how to write clearly and concisely, and remembering the four 'W's' of journalism - who, what, where, and when.

Every writer or journalist should have this KW book on their desk, along with his other book, 'English, Our English (and how to sing it), which in my opinion, is far better than 'Eats Shoots and Leaves', as a guide to English Grammar and sentence construction.

Having read this book yes it is true the standards of English used in newspapers has dropped appallingly over the years, well not just in newspapers but throughout schools and all printed matter, letter writing included.
This book is a guide to how it should be done.
