In this age of declining standards in spelling, punctuation and grammar thanks to lacklustre teaching in schools and such things as text messaging, this book reminds us of how our beautiful and ancient language should be used.
For journalists, this is a timeless handbook and it should be re-printed now and forever more.
On top of all that, it is one of the funniest books I have ever read.

I had to re read my treasured dog-eared copy of this classic today on hearing of the death of the greatest newspaper writer of our age. That age being a generation before fake celebrity and free DVDs being given prominence over writing, subbing, informing and entertaining. One day this book will be re-issued and a new generation will learn what it has been missing.

Before Lynn Truss was a twinkle in her subeditor's eye, this was the absolute and undisputed bible for journos hacks and down table subs. No other manual was ever written with such wit and wisdom. No one (not even the great Gowers) ever made such sharp sense of our language. Too many daily papers today are produced by people with degrees and qualifiactions who do not make half so good a fist of things as anyone whose entire training was the minutes in the editor's office and the handing over of this first rate handbook. Spot any mistakes in my review if you are of the right generation.
