Product Description

Following on from Mathias Kaden's effort in September, next in line to mix it up for the illustrious 'Watergate' CD series is New Jersey house innovator and widely loved scene figurehead Kerri Chandler.

The club is now in its 11th year, with this series hitting instalment number 15. Kerri has enjoyed a long running relationship with Watergate, and this album is the perfect coming together of two clubbing tour de forces. Across the course of 18 tracks, the MadHouse and MadTech boss, tireless DJ, and ever evolving house producer lays out his vision of house music as it sounds in 2013, calling on tracks old and new from a wide array of labels, as well as some exclusives, including two brand new productions from Chandler himself. The compilation was recorded live, with a certain raw energy that takes you right to middle of the dancefloor and below the club's famous lights without actually having to leave your own home.

The mix kicks off with the excitable diva house of Detroit Swindle, before touching on the bassline heavy workout of Headless Ghost on Clone Royal Oak. Mixed as expertly as you would expect of someone who has been doing so for more than 20 years, the journey goes on to take in MadTech act No Artificial Colours, before Kerri's own 'Think Of Something' track (made exclusively for this mix) proves him to be as pioneering as ever, with its fulsome house bounce and warm musical tropes.

Dipping into techier stuff from Bass Culture boss D'Julz, Oslo's returning talent Johnny D and the charismatic organic stylings of Real Cool's 'U Know U Know', all shades of the house spectrum are catered for here in typically cohesive style. Also included along the way is another Kerri exclusive, 'Mama', this time made in collaboration with Ibadan records boss and bonafide house hero Jerome Sydenham.

Having first started producing and remixing for Atlantic Records in the late 80s for acts like Kool & The Gang, Kerri Chandler is still as relevant and refreshing as ever, as this album proves.

So, firstly, this album has received some pretty mediocre reviews from some of the online music press - especially RA.

Why, I ask myself as I have now been listening to this for nearly 3 weeks? Well, to be honest I don't really know. I am really enjoying it, there are some lovely vocal tracks like the off kilter vocal on the opener from Detroit Swindle or the upbeat funk of the No Artificial Colours track.

There are also a couple of tracks from Kerri himself and and I am loving the mechanical but fun Italoboyz track - they normally deliver and have yet again.

There is one low point. For me, I can't get the Johnny D track. There's nothing essentially wrong but I'm glad that it's buried in the middle of the mix as it means you don't notice it too much.

Other sites' reviews have criticised the Nu track - "Who loves the Sun" but I find it's nice to bring back the vocals again and it has a dreamy kind of feel to it.

Finally, I absolutely love the Tom Demac track "Crewcuts and Curls" - not one I heard before but it really is a highlight.

This isn't really traditional Kerri Chandler fare but it's very very good and I have absolutely no issue with him playing these kind of tracks live in club - I would definitely go back again and again and.... well you get the point!

I was lucky enough to be given a promo copy of this CD and I have to say it's not left my car CD player since!

If you like Kerri Chandler, then this CD is a no brainer, it really captures Kerri's set style well.

Plus with this mix being put out by Berlin's Watergate club, you can expect a good standard of mix. If you buy Fabric or DJ-Kicks CDs, this ones for you.
