This is the US version of the 4th If album, whoever in the UK/Europe this was released as If4 with slightly different track selection.

On If4 you get:

1. Sector 17

2. The Light Still Shines

3. You In Your Small Corner

4. Waterfall

5. Throw Myself To The Wind

6. Svenska Soma

which was the original album with no bonus tracks. On this version Track 7 & 8 are bonus A & B sides of the single and track 9 is an alternate take. The rather annoying thing is that both CD versions should have had the tracks unique to the other as bonus tracks. Watherfall is the most complete but that means you miss out on the track Svenska Soma, which as I remember from when I had it on vinyl, is an excellent track but with If4 you miss out on Paint Your Pictures and Cast No Shadows. This is a great album whichever version you get and I would recommend If,If2 & If3 also, particularly If 3 which is my favourite. A great band who deserve greater recongition.

You aren't especially interested (but I'll tell you anyhow!)
There I was, aged 17,in Banbury market one Saturday afternoon in 1973 with 10p left to spend. I was rifling through the REALLY cheap sigles.
Plain cover- "UA"records- Waterfall/You in Your Small Corner"-IF.
I bought it,took it home and put it on my obsolete mono record player! What a bargain! Two great songs- but it was the "B" side that I really loved.
Somehow, over the years, that single got mislaid and I've waited patiently for any sign of it to reappear.
At last! It has turned up on this CD.. So I'm enjoying the pleasure of getting this great track back in my collection. Why not complete yours by getting it too?
Think Blood Sweat and Tears made in the UK?
Phil (aged 48)
(Who knows where the time goes?)

Essential stuff for IF fans 31 Jan. 2001
By "tony_hunt" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Many of the titles on this CD correspond to those on IF 4 and/or Europe '72, but are mostly live takes and are different to those on Europe '72, which makes for interesting comparison. Given that Europe '72 is the ultimate, I'd recommend enjoying Waterfall first.
The production leaves something to be desired on some tracks, hence only four stars, but this CD is still an essential part of the small number of recordings by IF that'll we'll have to live with: with the recent tragically early decease of Dick Morrissey, we'll certainly never get any more.
Three of the tracks feature a new, but also excellent rhythm section of Dave Wintour (bass) and Cliff Davies (drums). The latter wrote Cast No Shadows, which along with Paint Your Pictures (Morrissey) are, I believe, only to be found on this album and are so good they would on their own justify its purchase.

if waterfall; 30 Aug. 2007
By James S. Yeoman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is their last album with the original lineup. In fact, the album is partially written and played by the new lineup, and the lost of Dave Quicy, sax, vocalist Hodginson, etc, meant only the sax man Morrisey remained. Not that he is not great, but he had no help or competition writing, and if suddenly lost their synergy. I have never seen if 4 until today, and it seems to have many of the same songs. What gives?
But to get back to the review: The songs with the original group are good enough to justify the price of the album, if you like if. My favorite is Waterfall, but that may be because that's the only song I can play, but is catchy. This group (original lineup) is definitely music to listen to, pay attention to, and not to use as background. If you like Soft Machine, Manfred Mann's Chapter 3, or other sax based group's, you'll like this. If 1 is better, but more demanding. Their best of album is half way between, with their best songs and the ones that were used for intellectual radio shows themes (not to say anything negative). Together, this is the best sax/reeds interplay band, and Morrisey plays A1 flute (may he rest in peace). I think Quincy played in Manfred Mann's Chapter 3, but I may be wrong, and Morrisey played with AWB.

NOSTALGIA NOTHING --- THIS IS JUST GREAT MUSIC! 8 Dec. 2007
By Milton Gregory Grew - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I first heard the Waterfall LP back around 1975 in Canada when my high school buddy's older brother had a copy and we used to listen to his albums after school. I listened to it over and over. Then I found it in a record store and continued to listen to it often. I still take the LP out and listen but now I have a CD of it as well. I get way too much pleasure from this album and the earlier If recordings. It's hard to describe but you get the sense that these musicians really enjoyed what they were doing and they knew it was a unique and creative blend of rock and jazz but with great melodies, lyrics and solos. You really wish bands like this could just go on but they always seem to come to an early end. I am just thankful that I was introduced to them early enough and my enjoyment of them has not diminished over the years.

Great portrait of IF 11 Feb. 2008

This is a fantastic collection of some of IF's best recorded live and studio material. Thankfully it was the my first introduction to IF and as such led me to a broad collection of their music. Truly moving stuff.

Vintage IF 9 Jan. 2014

The last gasp for the original band. Not quite as unique as the first three, but absolutely worthwhile if you're a fan of the band. The German recreation of the original LP packaging is extremely nice.
