Review

It's easy for beginners to lose heart when they start to paint if their drawing lets them down. Like any craft, drawing takes practice, but for those eager to get going, it can become a real obstacle to developing painting skills. Terry Harrison has come up with a book that deals with this problem at a stroke, using such a simple idea, I wonder why it hasn't been done before. Ready to Paint: Watercolour Landscapes consists of five contrasting landscape paintings, each demonstrated in considerable detail, step by step. The novelty lies in the fact that in the middle of the book you can find six sheets of tracing paper, printed with the outlines of each of the paintings, plus one bonus composition. These can be removed easily from the book, and instructions are provided on how to transfer the image to your paper. Readers can then concentrate on the business of painting and create five or six beautiful images including a vibrant poppy field, a simple, sunny doorway, bluebell woods, a footbridge within the woods, and a village within the snow. The additional image is a river view, shown as a finished image rather than through a demonstration. Terry is a highly experienced painter and teacher, and his guidance is very easy to follow. He is keen to emphasise that painting should be fun, and this method goes a long way towards building the confidence necessary to really enjoy the process of using paint and capturing a successful image on paper. You can't really go wrong. I hope this is the first of a series, as beginners will love it. --Leisure Painter, Jan 08

Terry Harrison is a very popular artist and explains techniques in a way that is easily understood, and essential for beginner artists. In this book he covers use of his brushes, designed to his specification and he covers basic painting techniques and useful colour blends for landscape scenes. The innovative thing about this new book however is that Terry has included re-usable tracings of the scenes so that the artist can get straight on with painting techniques and not have to worry about drawing skills, something thats sets many would be artists back. He explains very clearly how to use the tracings to create outlines on watercolour paper ready for painting. Poppy Field, Doorway, Bluebell Woods, Footbridge in the Woods, Village in the Snow are all subjects he has chosen as demos for this book, and will appeal to any lover of traditional country scenes. He has some very clear instruction on how to complete these beautiful paintings including excellent step by step photographs to accompany the very clear text. He is very precise on which technique and which colour to use, and combined with the tracings supplied this makes it simple for even a beginner artist to produce a very creditable painting, yet the subjects are such that they will also appeal to the more experienced artists wishing to brush up on landscape skills. An excellent book for both beginners and those with some experience, its inclusion of tracings of subjects is bound to appeal to many people. --Jeannie Zelos Artworks

If you would love to wield a paintbrush and produce dreamy watercolour scenes but are always put off by the drawing part, then this is the book for you! All the drawings are ready on tracing paper in the centre of the book and all you have to do is trace them. Full details are given. Scenes include a poppy field, doorway, bluebell woods, footbridge in the woods and a village in the snow. Each scene had full step by step painting instructions (up to 48 in some cases), so you can recreate these beautiful pictures. --Cake Craft & Decoration, April 08

What a great idea! 5 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
In his latest book, Terry Harrison has taken away the fear factor for duffers like me. I like to paint, but cannot draw well enough to get what I see on paper. I own a multitude of instructional volumes, but none have improved my output like this book did. It provided the skeletons of the landscapes to allow me to get it on my paper, and then follow the instructions about painting. It may not have improved my technique, but it has greatly improved my confidence! I'm still not an artist, but I'm beginning to see where I went wrong before and feel more able to branch out on my own. I hope there will be a similar publication for seascapes, to allow me to get as much understanding of those as this book enabled me to about landscapes. If there were an award for best instructional art book of the year, this would definitely get my vote. Thank you Terry Harrison.

This book is a revelation.

I have recently attended a short leisure course in watercolour, the teacher was very helpful in that I can now draw the sketch very easily, and mix some colours. He put emphasis on using only a small number of brushes (sometimes only one brush for the whole picture) and paints as required, I guess it is very important for beginners to develop essential skills. But I always find controling the water and paint rather tricky. Putting texture on grounds, and painting trees and grass is always a great difficulty.

After the course, I came across this book. I immediately like it. Not because the tracing paper, but the demonstration works are so attractive. I thought to myself, I'd love to paint that.

It turned out that painting nicely isn't that difficult after all. I have followed the demonstrations and painted two pictures. They turned out great. I applied the techniques and painted my own pictures. People thought they were so good that they wouldn't believe that I painted them.

But there is CATCH!

This book's techniques require special brushes and paint, which is what made the painting "easy".

Brushes: Terry developed his own range of brushes. They are great for paining trees, grass and leaves, giving very sutble textures and details. They are very easily to use, but cost money. Also, they are not available in large local art shops.

Paints: Most colours used in the book are non standard colours. Midnight green, sunlit green, country olive, etc. These could be mixed by other standard greens like viridian and amber or siena.

I was caught short on this. I didn't start copying the paintings until a couple of weeks later when I eventually found a couple of similar brushes. The results were great. And I liked the techniques. Just thought I should mention so if you are in to simplicity, and not wanting to be boged down by millions of brushes then perhaps this is not your book!

really for beginners! 17 May 2009
Format:Paperback
Watercolour Landscapes (Ready to Paint) My husband and I decided to take up painting, but as neither of us had done it before we decided to get some books on the subject. This was one of them and what a boon it has been, describing every step from stencil to highlighting/shading, mixing paints and applying. We love it and Rob has actually framed a few for friends as they seem to enjoy them too. The stencils supplied in the book are really lovely. If you enjoy this one you will enjoy the others, I especially like the flowers in the following book Watercolour Flowers (Ready to Paint) Happy painting.
