Have you always wanted to try your hand at watercolour but didn't know where to start? If so, this is the book for you. In his 50 years of teaching, Bill Whitsett has helped thousands of people of all ages blossom into accomplished painters using the simple methods described here. With a series of bite-sized lessons, let Bill show you how easy it is to paint with watercolour - and how beautiful the results can be. Learn how to paint convincing trees using a few simple brushstrokes, how to depict a sultry summer sky using a variegated wash, how to show the gleam of light falling onto the skin of a grape, and the correct proportions for lifelike figures. Through more absorbing, longer projects, you will be able to create your first full watercolour paintings. Bill's foolproof area-by-area technique makes landscapes a breeze, and simple step-by-step instructions will help you to capture the delicate beauty of a summer rose. No-nonsense advice and clear diagrams lead you through the subjects of colour theory, composition and how to design a painting, and there is a useful guide to the equipment you'll need. By the time you have worked through all the lessons in the book you will have acquired confidence and enthusiasm - and will just want to keep on painting!

Bill Whitsett is over 80 years of age and is a remarkable person who manages to get the best out of everyone he teaches. Born in Cleavland, Ohio, USA Bill moved over to England several years ago and now lives in Suffolk running several courses in watercolour painting and pencil drawing. This book is ideal for the absolute beginner - one who has no knowledge of watercolour painting. Each section is broken down into easy steps. If the reader reads each step in sequence they will build up a lovely colour painting using just a few paint colours. Many other books confuse the reader by using too many different colours which can make learning to paint difficult. As the reader progresses through the book they gain more and more experience and confidence of water colours. Once you start to read Bill's book it is very difficult to put down as he has a very "laid-back" approach to teaching you new skills. The book is worth every penny - and look out for Bill's new book being published later in 2004.

Brilliant book. Most beginner books seem to assume that you already paint regularly and just need your technique sharpened, but this book is for people like me, who have no idea how to start painting - in watercolour or any other medium. It starts by advising on materials and how to set out your workspace, discusses colours, and then introduces exercises to show you how to use the paint, with reassuring titles like "Making Watercolour Behave." It then moves on into painting elements of pictures - sky, clouds, trees and so on, one at a time, until you're painting a complete landscape. The book finishes with still life painting. I took this book out of my local library, began to work from it and very quickly decided to buy my own copy from Amazon. Loved it!
