I bought the album because I had already heard track 5 "God is good" and loved it on the first listen. Dustin has a fantastic voice and the whole album has great lyrics.
I have felt a bit battle damaged in my Christian walk lately. This album has encouraged to keep my eyes on Jesus.
The album finishes with a celebratory song, "It is finished" reminding us that the battle has already been one on the cross.
Highly recommended!

I have always been a huge Thrice fan and appreciated the depth of their lyrics. Now Dustin's songs go even deeper and I love it. It is mostly acoustic/singer-songwriter album but there is defiantly some Thrice-ness in there!

I'm enjoying most of the songs. I have sung Grace Alone in a church and wanted to hear more of Dustin Kensrue's work. I enjoyed a lot. A couple of tracks not quite my thing, but still good overall

Great, great album! Such a mix of songs. Don't expect anything Thrice-y. Dustin has done a great job!

The Water and The Blood: A Worship Album 1 Oct. 2013
By Stephanie Edgerly - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
First off, let me provide some background information about myself. I have been a Christian my whole life, I love Jesus. I am also a fan of Thrice (Dustin Kensrue's former band) and all the music they have ever created. From First Impressions to Major/Minor; I have loved it all. Thrice is easily my favorite band hands down. Dustin Kensrue's side projects and solo albums have always had a place in my heart as well. Now let me talk about my view on modern day Christianity and "Christian" music.

I have never really been able to get into worship music; I have always thought there was something lacking in the quality of music at church. I would be sitting in church and I would think, "We have the greatest thing in existence to write and sing about yet this is the quality of music we provide?". It's disappointing in my opinion. We have such an awesome outlet to share God's love yet from my experience most christian musicians box His love, His message, and His wisdom into four lines repeated throughout the whole song. And now let me say this: The Water and The Blood is something I have never experienced before.

The musicianship is something unlike anything I have ever heard in the worship spectrum; Nothing I have ever heard in church or on the Christian radio has come close to this. Even outside of the Christian Music scene this album holds its own. I enjoy this record as much as I enjoy listening to Vheissu (Thrice's fourth album) or Major/Minor. The lyrics on this album are powerful, the vocals are filled with passion, and everything seems in its place. This is a record where I could see myself listening to it casually on my way to work or with a group of friends just hanging out. This is a phenomenal record that I feel anyone Christian or Non-Christian can enjoy. It is what every worship record should strive to be; quality music that glorifies the Lord.

Not Really For Thrice Fans 8 May 2014

Three stars, but with an asterisk.

Haven't written a music review before, but this album left me conflicted enough to do one, so bear with me.

Before I say anything, I'll say I'm a huge Thrice fan, and I really liked his solo album Please Come Home. Thrice has always been a slightly veiled and ambiguous Christian band with his lyrics. And even that solo album wasn't very in your face. And I like that about his music; it's not blunt. It's something that everyone can appreciate because of its subtlety. I think that that that is how you make people feel the deepest about art and music; because when you get specific, you limit your audience. That's what I think happened with this album for me. It got too specific, and I got excluded because I'm not Christian.

I had simply heard the single, which is basically everything that he's written before, and bought the album on impulse. The single is clearly about his religion, and it's not worship music. But the rest of the album is straight worship. I'm going to chalk this up to me having expectations set, and not even really looking too much at the track listing, because it's clearly worship if you look at the titles. The fault is mostly my own.

That said, the guy is a great songwriter, and if the lyrics weren't direct worship, I'd have taken it as a new Thrice album because the music alone could probably move me.

For me, this would have been a great album, if it had come out back when I was 15 and hadn't lost my religion. If you love Christ, that's good, and I don't judge, and this is a great album for showing love for him. To anyone else that isn't interested in Jesus Christ but loves Thrice, buy the single, "It's Not Enough," and hope that maybe Thrice will get back together in the near future.

Hands down...THE WORSHIP RECORD OF THE YEAR - 2013! 1 Oct. 2013
By DLJMAR - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
ORIGINAL POST: 9/30/2013

I supposed I'm a little biased. I have followed Dustin Kensrue since the early Thrice days and have thoroughly enjoyed all his works - Thrice, solo, The Modern Post, and now this worship record. But this is not the reason I give this album a five-star rating. Let me just say before anything else: if you are not a Christian or not a fan of worship music, I can almost guarantee you will enjoy this one - even for "the music". But I will definitely be writing a bulk of this review from the perspective of a Christian.

A brief commentary on each track:

1. REJOICE. Dustin co-wrote this song with modern hymn giant, Stuart Townend ("How Deep The Father's Love For Us", "In Christ Alone", "Power Of The Cross"). It is a fitting opener, a call to worship by rejoicing - even, in the words of the tag, "in the midst of suffering" because God "will help you sing".

2. ROCK OF AGES. This is one of my personal favorite hymns, and it was originally written by Augustus M. Toplady. (It also contains the album title in the line "The Water And The Blood" in the first stanza.) Dustin masterfully re-creates this by adding a chorus, and excellent female second voice by Hannah Garvey (who sings for other Mars Hill Music groups). It's the perfect bridge between the hymns of old and the musical taste of the current generation.

3. SUFFERING SERVANT. What's amazing about this song is that Dustin managed to take the beautiful Messianic prophecy from Isaiah 52:13-53:12 and put it into a singable format. This is going to be a staple at many churches during Good Friday

4. MY ONE COMFORT. The opening drum beat almost reminded me of Thrice's "All That's Left"... This one is the shortest track by way of lyrics, but its message is simply powerful: "My one comfort both in life and death is that I am not my own." (Words are based on the answer to Question 1 of the Heidelberg Catechism.) I can also see this one being used as a "postlude" song. Again, very singable for congregations.

5. GOD IS GOOD. The oft-repeated cliche "God is good all the time, all the time God is good" is set to a mid-tempo indie 16-beat. This is one of those perfect songs to listen to when you're going through some rough patches in life. One of the verses says, "And even when it seems He pays no mind, we have a guarantee of His great love." I know I'll definitely be putting this on future "Down In The Dumps" playlists!

6. GRACE ALONE. To be very honest, I prefer The Modern Post version of this song. But the one thing I appreciated about this newer recording was the acoustic intro. Musical taste aside, the lyrics are some of the strongest on the entire record - stuff that you have come to expect with Dustin.

7. THE VOICE OF THE LORD. So far, this is my favorite track after a few listens. There are definite elements that make this like a Thrice song. (I'm not quite sure of the personnel on this track, but from the sound of it, it's got to feature members of the super-talented King's Kaleidoscope.) The lyrics are drawn mostly from Psalm 29 - you can almost feel the earth shaking as you listen to this song, especially if you listen with earbuds!

8. IT'S NOT ENOUGH. This was the first single from the record that was released back in August 2013. Dustin described this as a Thrice-song-that-never-was (if I had to classify which album, I would say "Vheissu"). It is a song based on the book of Ecclesiastes, lamenting the meaninglessness of life apart from God. And this one seems to be the track that even non-Christians truly appreciate.

9. COME LORD JESUS. Few people can successfully write a singable song in 5/4 timing. Dustin is definitely one of those "few people". This track draws its inspiration from Revelation 22, longing for the imminent return of Jesus - something we all as Christians ought to look forward to with great anticipation!

10. O GOD. Zach Bolen of Citizens (also on Mars Hill Music) wrote this song, and Dustin does an outstanding cover. It's another one of those tracks to add to your "Down In The Dumps" playlists, reminding us of God's presence and unfailing love through thick and thin.

11. IT IS FINISHED. One of Christ's final words on the cross was "It is finished!" Meaning that the work of salvation is finished. Complete. Nothing else we need to do - or can do - to purchase salvation because Christ already did! This record began with a track called "Rejoice" and ends with an equally joyful track declaring "It is finished! He has done it!"

[12. PSALM 145 (iTunes exclusive). As an owner of both the physical copy as well as iTunes version, I will say that it's worth getting the iTunes version if you don't care about having an actual CD. And you will get this exclusive track as a reward. Without the benefit of the lyrics in the liner notes, I don't know how much of the Psalm is covered, but it is essentially a dynamic translation of Psalm 145 set to music. Great for Scripture memory!]

Simply put, this is THE ALBUM of the year. You need to stop debating getting this album just buy it from Amazon, iTunes, or Mars Hill Music!

Update 10/28/2013

Finally got my vinyl version - it is absolutely splendid! Navy blue cover, clear vinyl (though my turntable is not working, I am certain the sound quality is top notch), and the fine folks at Mars Hill Music threw in a poster, a notebook, and a piece of Laffy Taffy candy as part of the pre-order!

Maybe another update after I hear the vinyl sounds...but I am hoping this review suffices to convince you to buy a CD, vinyl, or MP3 version of the best worship album of 2013! #TheWaterAndTheBlood

If you love Jesus but struggle with "christian" music as a genre, this record might be for you! It has lyrical depth, prominent theology, strong melody, and rocks hard. This is one of my favorite records right now!
