Product Description

Review

'A showcase for the work of National Geographic's David Doubilet, an heir to Cousteau and Cartier-Bresson, whose underwater photojournalism, with its painterly contortions of colour and geometry, transcends mere reportage' (The New Yorker) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

Beneath the world's waters lie landscapes, species, vegetations and populations as diverse as those on land, yet these kingdoms have been explored by few. This book looks at the work of David Doubilet, artist, diver, and underwater photographer. From the shores of the Galapogos to the Red sea, from the Pacific ocean to the fresh waters of North America, the book includes over 25 years of the photographer's work, and reveals the beauty of more than 30 bodies of water rich with life forms.

A genius 16 Sep 2002
Format:Hardcover
I had unknowingly admired Doubilet's work in many National Geographic articles over the years. The recent Great White cover photo was fantastic although a little untimely as it had to be hidden from my girlfriend who I was going diving with for 2 weeks a month later.

I was proud of a few photos I took on that holiday but when I saw this book I almost threw my camera away. Doubilet takes underwater photography to another level altogether. This book displays Doubilet's talent and dedication to the full with a diverse portfolio taken over many years from all over the world. The light in his trademark above and below water photo's is so perfectly balanced my friends assumed it was manipulated.

Buy this book for anyone who appreciates natural beauty. My Mother and girlfriend were first on my list and just as impressed.

Doubilet has produced his most wonderful portrait to date of marine life beneath the waves. A rich tapestry of images and fantastic colours make this book the perfect 'coffee table' accompaniment. Doubilet is particularly skillful at focussing on his individual subjects and really bringing them to life. As Cousteau once said,'The civilised world as we know it ends as soon as one puts his head beneath the water.' This book serves as a fascinating insight for all those interested in the amazing creatures that inhabit our oceans, and for those of us that have already experienced this wonder, it serves to remind us that we all have a responsibility to protect these special places.

Doubilet has used many subtle but effective techniques in his photography that perfectly compliment his subjects. He has a skill of making the subject the focus and the background complimentary which many aquaphotographers find hard given the nature of there buisness. A highly recomended book to everyone who has an apreciation for art, diving and nature. This book is by far the best underwater collection to date.
