Porter is an imposing figure - he had a college scholarship as a linebacker - and his voice is the significant part of that presence. The album Water is a wonderful collection of jazz standards and self-penned tracks like '1960 What?' which evokes civil rights unrest in 60s Detroit and, on a wider arc, the killing of Martin Luther King: it is more soul vocal than jazz and its politically charged narrative is delivered over 12 minutes of hypnotic thrust and repetition.

Opener 'Illusion' establishes Porter's fine jazz vocal, and the subsequent 'Pretty' introduces the scatting - only an occasional feature - that echoes Kurt Elling, as well as instrumental support from a collection of excellent musicians including saxophonist James Spaulding.

Another self-penned song, the title track 'Water', presents Porter's craft as lyricist with its metaphoric thread, and the album finishes as it should on an acappella performance of the standard 'Feeling Good', sealing the vocal imposition of this big and talented artist.

Rarely have I been stopped in my tracks and left breathless by what is easily the soul or jazz track of the year - 1960 What? It is a 12 minute + tour de force of soul jazz and worth the price on its own. The fact is there is not a false note on the album and surely one of the great debut albums. Lonely One & Pretty are just exceptional songs performed by someone with so much soul and spirituality that he just demands to be listened to. This not background music for a dinner party as the musicianship that supports this singer and the live feel to the production add even more atmosphere. No autotune needed by this guy. Finished off with an acapella performance of Feeling Good which is surely the finest ever recorded. Buy it. Tell your friends. Turn this man into the star he deserves to be.

Saw hin on Jools Holland & tried to get his album for ages but it wasn't available in UK for a while. Best cd I've bought in a long time! Smooth cool voice with good old fashioned, can't beat mellow jazz!! Luv it & hope you will too!

A truly wonderful album of original and cover songs from a supremely talented singer backed by a superb group of musicians.
Gregory Porter's loose languid style
evokes memories of former Jazz titans
Andy Bey and Mark Murphy and his
composition skills are both urgent and
vital.
With '1960 what ?' he even turns
what is essentially a protest song into a
future dance classic.
'Pretty' 'Magic Cup' 'Wisdom' & 'Lonely
One' are also terrific tunes, indeed
there is no filler on this album as all
eleven tracks are worthy.
Of the band only James Spaulding is
familiar but take a note of these guys as they could easily strike out on their own as a cohesive unit.

Brilliant! Contains the modern classic, '1960 What' which makes it worth it alone. The man is superb live and the albums keep that memory alive.

Gregory Porter - Water - the more I listen to it the more I like it - wonderful selection of tracks that are mesmorising and jazzy.

It's a good job. Finally back to the roots of black music away from banality of some rap made of luxury and ostentation.
