Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Could Kenny Rogers be a continuous, viable presence on country radio today? Probably not. In 1999, "Buy Me a Rose" made him the oldest artist to reach #1 in the history of the country charts. And to the contemporary tattoo-and-tank-top record buyers, that rates the Gambler a great-grandfather--hey, maybe as old as Hank Williams, ya think? Nonetheless, Water and Bridges, his first studio effort in three years, is an impressive comeback. Produced by Dann Huff (Faith Hill, Keith Urban), who keeps the backing leaner than you might expect, the album spotlights a mature man looking back and surveying his life with clear-eyed honesty and more than a little regret. What strikes a listener most is both the quality of songs (by such veteran writers as Craig Wiseman, Annie Roboff, and Mike Reid) and how authentic and soulful Rogers seems throughout, particularly in dealing with the recurring theme of loss. Whether contemplating a long-ago abortion, a lifelong rift with a parent, or the tug of home--even when home is no longer there--Rogers always underplays the sentiment, adding weight to his pathos. "The Last 10 Years (Superman)" and "The Petition" seem a little too obvious and maudlin, but Huff and Rogers make up for it with the extraordinary "You'll Know Love," a sophisticated and anguished ballad of nearly paralyzing grief. Call it just one of many surprises on this album of unexpected and serious depth. --Alanna Nash

Like me, you may have never considered, buying a Kenny Rogers CD ! ? Obvious thoughts,...." old has-been, country singer ? "....but i, couldn't have been more wrong !!

This CD is superb ! There isn't a weak song on this CD. It's a colection of emotive, thought provoking songs. The production, and muscianship, are of the highest standards, all topped of by Kenny's amazing vocals ! I never realised, what a superb singer Kenny Rogers was / is ! ( I'm already checking out his back catalogue )

This is one of the best CD's i've heard this year ! Purchase !....you won't be disappointed !

By Amanda Richards VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Three years since his last album, and nearly forty years since his first album (with The First Edition), Kenny Rogers comes up with more of the same - the same voice, the same story-type country ballads and the same old Kenny Rogers charm.

A slow 'n' easy album, first single "I Can't Unlove You" fits the old Kenny Rogers format like a glove, and is a sure-fire radio-ready track for country music stations everywhere. "Water & Bridges"; "Someone is Me" and "Calling Me" (with Don Henley) are all good tracks for fans of country music, although they probably won't generate much heat outside of the genre.

There are some tracks that are syrupy enough to cause acne outbreaks, and the mushy factor rises to the roof with "My Petition", sample lyrics below:

"Make a law where Daddy's don't work late
Keep Uncle Joe an' those soldiers safe
Give those kids on TV all they want to eat
Put a stop to bullies on the bus
No crime, no waits, no hate, no drugs
Give a blanket and a job to people on the street."
An' I thought: "Man, ain't that a place I'd like to live in."
And I thank God for that boy that's out there fixin'
The world with his petition...

He recaps the last decade in "The Last Ten Years (Superman)", his tribute to Christopher Reeve.

We watched Oklahoma sifting through the damage
An' we watched a US President get caught
We watched shareholders watched their savings vanish
We all cried when we watched those towers fall
We lost Minnie Pearl, Ron Reagan and Sam I Am
We even lost Superman, mmm.

A strong country album from the king, but should have a warning label for sugar content.

Amanda Richards

Classic Kenny 9 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
I first heard snippits from this album on itunes, but was unable to hear full length versions of the songs. Having bought this album a couple of weeks ago, it's been played almost to death!! My husband heard some of it and what he said just about sums it up; it's classic Kenny. The melodies and style taking you back to early Kenny whilst covering up to date subjects. My favourite song is "I Can Feel You Drifting", but every song on this album is worthy of credit. Full marks to Kenny for the way he comes across, and full marks to the song writers who have given him the tools for the job.
