The King's Singers are a very accomplished group, and I have enjoyed their madrigals and their comic patter songs over the years. They arrange ingeniously, and their singing is excellent. However, I'm one of these people who doesn't like my folk music over-sophisticated, and we get too much of that here, to a point where it sounds self-regarding and precious. The better items hew most closely to the basic melodies without too much over-elaboration, as in "O Waly Waly" and "The Oak and the Ash," but even granted that, how much more expressive are, say, Britten's arrangements? Also, I tend to prefer solo singing in folk material -- and I like a roughness preserved (see Dylan). These are my prejudices though -- if you like the King's Singers, be assured that they sound very good here.
