Book Description

8 Mar 2010
Today is a day Mark Miles will never forget. And it's only just beginning...The next Houdini and one of Mark's few remaining PR clients, Reg Turpin, is about to attempt a great feat of escapology, and then Dr. Herman Temple, the self-appointed guru, will arrive to conduct a seminar on the dynamics of leadership at the Grand Atlantic Hotel. It's going to be his big day and nothing's going to spoil it. Well, nothing apart from the seedy private investigator who's unpacking his thermal underwear, pyjamas and a .32 Smith & Wesson at a local bed and breakfast; Avril, the voluptuous, insatiable wife of the drunken hotel owner; a man called Bela; and Alice, Temple's beautiful, if terrifying ambitious, assistant.

Mr Hodges you are hired , a crime thriller is a crime thriller right , WRONG , Mr Hodges
manages to combine razor sharp satire with a crime writing panache recalling the great Raymond Chandler .

I cannot recommend this book highly enough , if you love Under The volcano , The Great Gatsby , or the films of
James Cagney you will not be disappointed , buy and enjoy .

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkly entertaining 1 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
What a wonderfully enjoyable book, full of dark humour with Mike Hodges' characteristically irreverent slant on life. His hero is both believable and familiar, and for many his dig at the whole sorry pursuit of success will ring a resounding chord. Very highly recommended, although not for the faint hearted or those of a nervous disposition.

Imagine Raymond Chandler had scripted " Never give a sucker an even break "and you are close to this terrific book from Mike Hodges . Surprisingly very sexy perhaps even more shocking it is laugh out loud funny , as he takes well aimed shots at the
flim flam ,snake-oil salesmen who run every aspect of modern life .

5.0 out of 5 stars Hodges Noir 4 Oct 2012
By Garner
Format:Paperback
If you've seen Get Carter and Croupier, you won't be surprised to know that Mike Hodges has written a thriller that is every bit as sharp, suspenseful and darkly comic as the movies he's revered for. In a genre that is overcrowded and often formulaic, Watching The Wheels Come Off is unusually distinctive: it's fast and tense, but in the best traditions of crime fiction, it has charisma. It has a Voice - and that voice is knowing, sardonic, world-weary and razor sharp. This book is good enough to have a new genre named for it: Hodges Noir.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dire, dire, dire 5 May 2012
By Rach
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a regular reader and bought this because a) it was on a cheap offer and b) I wanted to try something different to what I normally get. I wish I hadn't bothered. I'm not usually able to leave a book unfinished but this one is the exception.
