I had only a vague memory of watching this series as a kid, but I bought the first series out of nostalgic curiosity, and I was instantly hooked. Emma Wray and Paul Bown absolutely are superb as Brenda and Malcolm, the on-off pair who are just about the most miss-matched couple imaginable. They bring a really charming quality to the story, and they really invest in their characters. Brilliant comic timing the pair of them.
The supporting cast are excellent, my favorites being the wonderful Liza Tarbuck as Brenda's big sister Pam, and the fabulous and totally hilarious Noreen Kershaw, as their mum, Joyce. She doesn't appear until the later series but was much talked about from the very beginning, and when she finally appears you don't believe that they could have found someone so perfectly insane and spot-on for the part. A bit of a casting coup!
A real gem of a series, lost in the mists of sitcom time until now, so buy it and enjoy!!
