This book encompasses a huge slice of American history but parecels it together to be seen through the eyes of a 'normal' and real person... a young girl. The story could be accused of jumping backwards and forwards in history but any real life and honestly told story gathers threads from times and dates that don't sit next to each other on a calendar page. I loved the speeches by Martin Luther King Jr and found the funeral dedication to 3 of the 4 girls as uplifting as any of his more widely reported and well known speeches. Thank you to the author for telling a story that can still have an impact today. We still live in a world where the same hatred exists (though it may have changed its form)but we still live in a world where the same love also exists and this book has helped remind me how the latter can and will endure.

I highly recommend this book for anyone , whether your interest is history, civil rights or just the power of the human spirit. This account from a very personal perspective, gives great incites into what was one of the darkest periods in our history for the human being, but also shows the ultimate triumphs of the brave actions of the leaders of freedom of the time and their followers, bravery mirrored in this authors account, her life and moving forward.

I had tunnel vision to segregation before reading this. Amazing first hand account of what went in Birmingham. This has now edged it's way to the top of my favorite books list and I recommend it to all my reader friends. This lady is an inspiration.
