Biography

The name High Contrast needs no introduction anymore; though when a young Lincoln Barrett signed on the dotted line back in 2000 he was a complete unknown. Signed on the strength of his mini-disc demos, the Welsh wonder has smashed his way through the d+b scene in no time at all.

His debut longplayer True Colours was released on Hospital to massive critical acclaim in June 2002, paving ... Read more in Amazon's High Contrast Store

Product Description

BBC Review

Following hot on the heels of TC's decidedly lukewarm Watch The Ride compilation, Welsh drum & bass supremo High Contrast steps up to the plates to see if he can give back the buzz kick-started by hip hop aficionados, The Scratch Perverts, and fellow junglist-cum-breaks maestro, DJ Zinc, at the beginning of this new-ish Harmless series.

Those who know HC - a stalwart of the Hospital Records stable - or have at least heard his True Colour and Tough Guys Don't Dance albums, will know what to expect from this mix: a deep, spectral take on d 'n' b with a bias towards uplifting sounds and a deliberate avoidance of anything too jack-hammery and tech-edged.

Sure enough he gets things off to a euphoric start with a trio of party tunes, namely his own Oldskool Revenge remix of Axwell's Found You, Mitsabishi's She Lied and Agent Alvin's reggae-inflected Wicked Man.

These scene-setters pave the way for an emotive and deceptively diverse journey, as HC digs deep into his vocal vaults and springs free Matrix & Futurebound's Family and the Brookes Brothers' Open Your Eyes, (a catchy little number that uses the same Bobby Caldwell sample as Common's hip hop anthem, The Light).

The mix gets shadier with Commix's mix of Rufge Kru's Is This Real, Lynx's Disco Dodo and Coolhand Flex's Must Feel, and also explores a bit of nostalgia via Blame's appositely titled Hindsight, before exploding into vivid colour again with In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (one of HC's own), Matrix & Futurebound's remix of Nu:Tone's System (featuring Natalie Williams) and Chase & Status' rollicking Hurt You.

Dropping the tempo and the vibe a little with his own Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Monsieur Contrast builds things up again for a grand finale that includes EZ Roller's Devil To Pay, Danny Byrd's retro-junglist Shock Out and - the denouement- his own classic, If We Ever.

While not the most risqué or groundbreaking mix around, there's rarely a dull moment here, and it helps reinstate both HC's rep as a capable DJ and Watch The Ride's rep as a decent series, tailor-made for urbanite floor-wreckers. --Paul Sullivan

A bouncy distinctive start, with tracks become quite hard and heavy from 11 onwards (Lynx - Disco Dodo is awesome!) but the last five tracks seem hastily thrown together - which include High Contrast's own excellent If We Ever - end up sounding like a real mess. Not exactly High Contrast at his finest.

Easy way to explain why this is under-rated - top notch anthems on this cd:

axwell found you, mistabishi she lied, agent alvin, wicked man,
high contrast sleepless, nu tone remix of family, brookes bros open your eyes,
blame hindsight, danny byrd labyrinth, brookes bros f zero,
high contrast gadda da vida, nu tone system remix, chase status hurt you,
logistics no words, high contrast kiss kiss bang bang,
bungle 25th floor vip(awesome) danny byrd shock out(awesome), high contrast if we ever.

theres only 7 tracks on here that are not anthemic, the rest are superb.
other reviewers need to get their hearing tested!

Ace- brilliant rolling tunes for rolling to. I also run to them- sure they help me knock a few mins off my normal route. One tune in the middle that gets a bit repetitive but hey nothings ever perfect...

After I read some reviews on residentadvisor and on here, I was under the impression that High Contrast - Watch The Ride mix is the best in the series...I was wrong. After I bought and listened to Zinc's mix I knew that it will be difficult for High Contrast to top it.

The mix, similar to Zinc's in the beggining starts off on the happy side but quickly turns more bangin from track 2 and on. All in all, its usual soulful stuff from High Contrast that goes a bit techy in the middle.

Fav tunes = "Axwell - I Found You (High Contrast's Oldskool Revenge Remix)", "Zinc - Twelve", "Logistics - Daybreak Sequence", "Blame - Hindsight", "Matrix & Shimon - Slipstream", "High Contrast - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida".

3 stars because it just didint live up to my expectations.

I bought this as I have High Society, which I love, especially the track 'Racing green'. Quite a good mix though.
