"A great ghost story. One of the best ever." Junior Bookshelf

Product Description
The dust flew in clouds, making her cough. Anne looked inside the last glass case. More writing. It was moving! Balls of fluff being pushed around like tiny mice. More letters appeared as she watched - AnHelpAnHelpAnHelp Anne Help. Who is writing the messages in the dust? What is the story behind the huge skull in the old Watch House? Alone and unhappy in Garmouth, Anne knows the shadows are following her, spirits of long-dead sailors who won't rest. And from behind its empty windows, the Watch House is watching her...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly scarey!, 4 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Watch House (Hardcover)
I read this book about 12 years ago when I was about 11. It was a fantastic read and I went on to read most of Robert's other books too, although there are a couple of more recent ones that I've not read - yet! Although the area in which the book is set is fictional, I know the area where Robert based it, and the Watch House is just as he describes it - it actually does look like it is watching you. Every time I go there now I think of this book and get a little shiver of fear!

4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy and absorbing ghost story, 27 Oct 2006

I love this book. Any boy or girl over nine could read it, especially those with parents through a divorce (though this was written back when divorce was unusual). The heroine is extremely likeable and the descriptions of the seaside town where she is staying are extremely vivid - as they should be, given that they were based on Westall's own town. The book not only takes in divorce but religion, money and morality as well. This story has not one but two ghosts, but you'll have to read to the end to find out how they are connected. Read with the lights on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinister and excellent, 8 Sep 2006
By T. Deegan (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This rates for me as one of Westall's best ever books. The plot starts well, the scene is excellently set and the nasty reality of what is happening unfolds brilliantly. The constant eerie disquiet, a good depiction of teenage angst, mordant evil lurking and the grim reality of shiwreck at sea in the 1800s add up to a spine-tingling tale. First read it when 11 and have been buying it for nieces and nephews since.
