Scofield's reading is richly resonant and compelling -- Times, May 1, 2004 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

These are masterly readings, by renowned thespian Paul Schofield, of two substantial works of poetry by T.S. Eliot. The Wasteland, first published in 1922, is one of Eliot's most influential works and has long been on the syllabus for A-Level English Literature. The Four Quartets consists of four long poems, first published between 1935 and 1942. They are linked by common themes, and are individually 'Burnt Norton', 'East Coker', 'The Dry Salvages' and 'Little Gidding'. These can be thought of as definitive readings of these poems, and Telegraph radio critic Gillian Reynolds has previously called for them to be published by Radio Collection.

Really Good 5 Aug 2005
By Michael Jacobs VINE™ VOICE
Format:Library Binding
Having heard Eliot's own readings of The Wasteland, I can say this is different in style but performed with slightly more emotion and dramatic energy. It is also read clearly, which means that although symbolism and literary references can remain hard to fully comprehend, the imagery is made as clear as possible. As well as an excellent reader, they are of course excellent poems. It probably won't be the kind of thing you listen to every other day, but nevertheless it's a fantastic thing to have in any CD collection.

The palpable sense of controlled emotion and depth, so much a feature of a Paul Scofield performance, is beautifully and appropriately deployed here. I've not yet heard the Eliot recording but, for me, this reading is convincing and moving.

My caveat concerns the intrusive, insensitive and frankly moronic inclusion of musical parentheses to the reading, the profundity of which absolutely demands dignified silence. What was in the producer's mind here entirely escapes me: if gilding the lily aspired to the level of criminality, this is an example.

Though far from enough to ruin the recording, its a real pity nonetheless.

The power of poetry 21 Aug 2010
Format:Library Binding
I had some previous knowledge of these two poems but the inspired reading made what had been obscure accessible to the the mind and emotions. It delivered exactly what I had hoped for and. incidently. arrived in time to supprt me in a time of the emotional stress of bereavement
