The story opens with the main character, Ryan, arriving at the office to find it has become a post-apocalyptic version of its former self, yet somehow still mostly functional. Outside the workplace, however, all is as before, all is normal. As I read on I wondered: is this a sci-fi scenario? Is it a hallucination in Ryan's mind? And so the story progresses, switching between the work day in its dystopian form and the outside world where Ryan has a normal social life with friendships and a romantic relationship.
At first Ryan doesn't question the duality too deeply but a crisis causes work and life to converge and he embarks on a search for understanding.
As a Gen X-er, I appreciated the cultural and SF-ish elements of the story, certainly the dullness/silliness of the office workplace, and the protagonist's search for meaning & happiness in life.
