Product Description

What if one day the steel doors of your office building's elevator opened and revealed that your workplace had been transformed into a desert wasteland? This is exactly the situation faced by Ryan, a cog in a corporate consultancy based in Montreal, Quebec. Over the next few weeks he strives to reconcile the desolate vista that surrounds him at work with his seemingly untouched personal life, until events in each environment begin to intersect in ways he could never have predicted. Ryan must then negotiate both the sands that surround him and the intricacies of human relationships in order to save the life of a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post-apoc workplace 14 Jun 2012
By Abe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story opens with the main character, Ryan, arriving at the office to find it has become a post-apocalyptic version of its former self, yet somehow still mostly functional. Outside the workplace, however, all is as before, all is normal. As I read on I wondered: is this a sci-fi scenario? Is it a hallucination in Ryan's mind? And so the story progresses, switching between the work day in its dystopian form and the outside world where Ryan has a normal social life with friendships and a romantic relationship.

At first Ryan doesn't question the duality too deeply but a crisis causes work and life to converge and he embarks on a search for understanding.

As a Gen X-er, I appreciated the cultural and SF-ish elements of the story, certainly the dullness/silliness of the office workplace, and the protagonist's search for meaning & happiness in life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, okay 5 Aug 2013

This story starts out well and held my interest through about two-thirds of the book. I liked the main character and sympathized with his plight of a deadend job. You do wonder what in heck is going on? Who is the stranger in the wasteland? But the end was such a let down! The Book could have used a good scrub for repeated words, melodramatic sentences, etc. A good, solid 2.5 stars, but gave it a 3 since I finished it.

I am a slow and steady kind of reader but I read this novel in one very long sitting. I could not put it down. The authors voice compelled me to keep turning pages. The story had a wonderful flow, bringing new twists into the fold at the perfect times. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars highly origional 30 Jan 2012

I really enjoyed this book. The concept is interesting and explores a familiar challenge in a highly original way. Well expressed with a lot of humor in the language. And it's nice that it's set in Montreal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Original, interesting. Out there, but not too far fetched. 23 Jan 2012

I bought this book yesterday and finished it within hours - I couldn't put it down (despite being unable to print it onto actual paper using the Kindle software).

The main storyline is original, and interesting; Out there, but not too far fetched. By the end of the novel I almost thought that the characters were my own close friends, and I wanted to know what else they were going to be getting up to now that the novel was over.

A very good first attempt, I look forward to future books by Benjamin Hunting.
