5.0 out of 5 stars New city, new themes, but reassuringly familiar sound, 4 Oct 2007
4 days after it's release, how come no one has reviewed this album yet? Steve Earle is a safe pair of hands these days, never straying far from the blueprint established over 12 quality studio albums. The move to New York has resulted in some subtle new twists on that sound - 'Satellite Radio' for example, but long time fans will find plenty to reassure them on this album. It's the usual blend of folk-country-blues, but reinvigorated, Earle's new home gives him something new to write about, and the city of New York features in several of the songs, most overtly 'City Of Immigrants'. It's country, only not country, folk only not folk - who cares what it is when the songs are this good. The extra DVD is a 35 minute interview during which Steve Earle talks twenty to the dozen with infectious enthusiasm about everything from Greenwich Village to a local guitar shop. There are also live versions of 3 songs, one of which is the almost obligatory duet with Allison Moorer, 'Days Aren't Long Enough', nowhere near as cloying as it could have been. In fact, this is a refreshing album from all points of view, the extra DVD providing the extra bit of cream in the coffee. A must-have for all Steve Earle fans, and a good place to start for the uninitiated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked., 10 Oct 2007

I would have reviewed this album sooner if it hadn't been for the postal strike. Steve Earle remains one of Americas most overlooked songwriters. This album came out the same day as Bruce Springsteen's new offering but without any Amazon blind faithful frenzy. After a few listens two things stand out Steve's love for New York City and his love for Allison Moorer. Steve has embraced new technology and made a raw, fresh, tender and beautiful album. "City Of Immigrants" and "Steve's Hammer" are instant classics that any songwriter would be proud of. Steve rounds the album off with a version of Tom Wait's "Way Down In The Hole" who like Steve gets better with each album he releases. PS. At least you can get a ticket for a Steve Earle show without having to pay greedy a scalping tout swine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Excellent, 31 Oct 2007

My favourite album is Just An American Boy, & the only time I have been to a gig of Stee Earle's was when he was touring this album & I absolutely loved it. However, WSS is a complete change of direction, obviously engendered by the recent changes in his life & it's just lovely - the songs are gentle, sweet almost, & his love for his new wife & new city shine through. I cannot wait to see him in Glasgow next year.

Carolyn Middleton, Aberdeen, Scotland
