Excellent. The complete Bluebird recordings from May 15, 1939 to March 22, 1940. The great Joshua Altheimer can be heard on 8 titles, probably the most authentic and moving classic blues pianist of all times. Horace Malcolm holds the piano on 8 other titles with some short but magnificent solos. The pulsation of Big Bill is recognizable on all 24 titles. Washboard Sam's vocals are not particularly attractive but his washboard beat sure is. Recommended.

Exellent example of roots of rock'n'roll and rockabilly... 7 May 2004

To say the very least Washboard Sam pioneered rockin' blues(just listen to Rockin' my Blues Away from Volume 6), and influenced everyone from John Lee Hooker to Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. Washboard Sam had a natuarl syncopation in his singing and rhythmic washboard playing. This is not merely hokum music this is teh roots of rock, swing, rockabilly, and the start of rockin' blues and jump blues, taht later Louis Jordan and Wynonie Harris would make popular to the public. however Sam was very popular in the 30's recording good time blues that was hot, and rockin' before anyone ever heard of rock! This dude was just way too cool and ahaed of his time, so all his recordings ttoday still sound modern fresh and rockin'!!! Pick up volume 4, and if you liek what you hear pick up volume 6, and if you need more, go with volume 7 and if your hooked just get al of the volumes in the Ducument records complete Washboard Sam series. Great rockin' stuff, awesome jump blues vocals and washboard playing that sounds no less sophistocated then Gene Krupa's drumming 10 years later!!!

Washboard Sam is my favorite pre WWII blues singer 21 Jun 2004

Washboard Sam was way ahead of hsi time, looking ahead at the r&b and jump swing to come in the mid 40's, this music rocks steady and rolls like crazy, and jumps and swings hard! This is really some fun and enjoyable party blues, that finds Sam's voice in frime form and his washboard playing is superb! This is truly joyous and exciting small combo swing music that is a link to the jump blues era of Louis Jordan and Wynonnie Harris. Rollickin' good time blues, another interesting fact is that Big Bill Broonzy is Sam's 1/2 brother, and they do sound alike vocally and musically(they both recorded advanced good time jump swing in the 30's). Great music, also check out Big Bill Broonzy's cd titled Good Time Tonight.
