Anglophobes beware! While not poncy like The Divine Comedy or The Monochrome Set, Animals That Swim are quintessentially English. Frontman (and drummer!), Hank Stars, has a thick London accent and his lyrics read like less-lurid (though no less humorous) Irvine Welsh short stories. Barely bothering to sing or rhyme, he paints vivid portraits of petty thieves ("The Greenhouse"), addicts looking for their next fix ("Kitkats and Vinegar") and other day-to-day goings-on in London's poorest neighborhoods. Yet, this isn't a depressing album. In fact it's quite romantic, in an odd sort of way and very funny. And catchy too. "Faded Glamour," "London Bridge," and "Dispatches from Lula" all have hooky choruses. You can probably find their first album, Workshy, in your local indie record store's used bin -- it's a good album, but I was the King, I Really was the King is a great one.
