What a story Buck O'Neil has to tell! By why, oh why, couldn't the publishers have hired legitimate ghostwriters to tell it. This book reads like it was excerpted from Highlights magazine. As a reader, I felt truly insulted. Too bad Tom Verducci or Tom Boswell or some actual baseball writer wasn't onboard to add STYLE to Buck's substance.

Buck O'Neil should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame for his contributions to baseball, baseball history, and for this book. This book will always be "right on time".

Buck O'Neil is a deserving member of Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation." As competent a writer as he was ballplayer, manager and scout, Buck is as easy to read as he is to listen to. I not only learned a great deal about Negro baseball, but life in general and what's important in it. Buck shares some important lessons with readers - it would benefit anyone to read it.
