"Hello," Allison Weiss writes on her website, "I play guitar and tell my secrets to audiences."
There's a lot to discover about Weiss's life, and perhaps that's an exercise best left to the listener. Listening to these songs of heartbreak and hope, it is clear that her own experiences have gone into crafting them. At the same time, they still they retain a wide emotional appeal, made even more poignant by being anchored in the real world.
Weiss's lyrics are complex and surely the best part of the listening experience for me. Her words constantly turn on themselves, revealing new and surprising meanings. Whatever you might expect Weiss's next words will be, they, happily, refuse to meet expectations.
The quality studio production of this album shows the same depth in the music as in the lyrics. It is a joy to hear the subtle instrumentation and effects blended into the studio versions of these songs. Weiss's usual visage of the lone singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar comes through at times as well; the times when the words are too raw with emotion to tolerate being smoothed over by her trademark catchy melodies and unbeat phrasing.
Weiss's second album to see wide release, "... Was Right All Along" is highly recommended.
