4.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive 5 Dec 2007
Format:DVD
Watched on a long haul flight, missed the last two minutes. Now I must buy it. That's an approval in my books. Great movie, credible if scary characters, soundtrack a bit muffled, but that could have been the jets!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but derivative 4 Nov 2008
By Jason Mills VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
It's about the oppressed office worker, seething inside. It uses a lot of visual tricks but without developing a distinctive style. Almost everything in it reminded me of other films: "Stalking Laura", "Fight Club", "Falling Down", "Arlington Road", "The Assassination of Richard Nixon", "The Hudsucker Proxy" - it even stole the tumbling rolled-up newspaper from "Blood Simple".

It's interesting enough, occasionally clever and surprising, and doesn't outstay its welcome, but ultimately it has nothing to say that hasn't been said many times before, and better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Curious black comedy 16 Feb 2010
By PJ Rankine TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Christian Slater is excellent as the office drone Bob Maconel in this curious black comedy about a man going 'postal' as it has become known. William Macey has fun as his boss and Elisha Cuthbert gives a sensitive performance as the office beauty suddenly crippled by the tragic events of the story. Star of this movie though is Bob's talking goldfish encouraging him to murder all his workmates then feed him. This is a black comedy but not obviously so and there were times when I was about to give up on it when something else would happen that sparked my interest and kept me watching. This film has invoked a lot of discussion on IMDB as to its true meaning so I won't spoil it for you here. Suffice it to say the ending left a lot of viewers wondering. The dvd is presented in full screen format with an adequate audio track.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed 2 Aug 2008
Format:DVD
What a horrid little film this is. In my book the only thing to recommend it is the actors' performances. Other than that it is a miserable, garbled mess.
Obviously make your own mind up, but not one I can recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slater's best in a long while 13 Dec 2007
By Matty
Format:DVD
So good to see Christian Slater in a good role again. Frank Capello's film is funny and disturbing in equal measures. Probably not to everyones taste (particularly the ending), but the beauty of He Was A Quiet Man is it's continuous surprises, never following down the route the viewer is used to in a standard Hollywood flick. Great support from Elisha Cuthbert and William H Macy. This is a fine example of a film that didn't set out to tick all the boxes, but instead set out to tell an interesting story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Surprisingly good drama 22 Jan 2008
By Kona TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Bob Maconel (Christian Slater) is the ultimate outsider; he has no friends and hates everyone, except for his secret crush, Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert), but she doesn't know he's alive. The only one who talks to him (besides his goldfish) is the office bully who makes his life miserable. A man who is just as crazy as Bob suddenly starts mowing down his co-workers, including the lovely Vanessa, but then Bob takes action.

I loved this movie. It was sad, funny, and unique. Christian Slater is virtually unrecognizable as the meek, middle-aged pencil-pusher whose fantasy life is the only life he has. Kudos to him for taking on a really complex and mature character. Elisha Cuthbert gives a fine performance as the unattainable office beauty who loves life more than she ever could have imagined. The movie goes beyond the typical alienated-man-against-the-world story and is quite really remarkable in its sensitivity and raw emotion. This is an unusual movie and an unforgettable one, and may cause you to look twice at that quiet guy in the corner cubicle. Highly recommended.

One of those films that you don't really like but can't seem to turn off! Christian Slater is an office geek who hates where he works and also hates his colleauges. His fish (yes, his fish) tell him to take a gun to work and gun them all down - but another office geek beats him to it - making Christian the hero........

3.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, surreal and dark comedy drama. 4 July 2010
By Ernie
Format:DVD
Bob Maconel is a lonely and unhappy man. Working as an office clerk for the nondescript ADD Corporation, he is often abused, ridiculed and humiliated by his colleagues and department manager. Stuck in his prison cell of an office cubicle Bob daydreams of selectively shooting fellow workers or blowing up the building.
When another badly treated worker has a breakdown and goes on a killing rampage, Bob kills him and instantly becomes a reluctant hero. The company boss promotes him to the job of Vice President of Creative Thinking and moves him into an office on the top floor which was once the office of Vanessa Parks the office beauty, who after being shot has become paralysed below the neck. Now forced into the limelight Bob soon finds that life is even more complicated and stressful than before.
Though very reminiscent of the 1993 film `Falling Down', this avoids being a just another revenge film by a smart and quirky plotline which constantly twists and turns, nearly always taking you in the opposite direction to which you think events are going to be played out. The story is sharp, the acting decent but the film is let down somewhat by some really inconsistent CGI which ranges from reasonably good to shabby and cheap looking PlayStation 2 quality effects.
Overall, this is a decent low budget film which is like a weird mix of `Falling Down', `Memento' and `Office Space' and while it's not the greatest of films it's well worth a look.
