An interesting read, all in all.

The book mainly traces antisemitism throughout the 19th century and early 20th century in Germany, and overall provides a good understanding of the societal currents leading up to Hitler's election victory 1933 and the holocaust in the 1940s. I find his approach in reviewing the attitudes within his own family - via old family letters - especially interesting, as it gives a "face" to the facts.

There are however, a few things I find a little jarring about the book:

1. He constantly pitches German Jews and Christians against each other, eventhough his own source material shows that the antisimites had as little regard for Christianity as for Judaism ("Pfaffen und Juden" [derogatory: Priests and Jews] being a common rallying call amonst them. This of course includes Hitler who also was an atheist, and hated Christianity with a passion. Measured by their percentage of the population, Priests and Preachers were the second largest group killed in the death camps.)

2. One of his main points is that "the Germans" were stupid (and therefore jealous of the smarter Jews). I find that hard to believe, not only because in the current WHO ranking, Germany has the highest collective IQ of any state in Europe, but also because it was a hotbed of invention in the 19th and early 20th century. The combustion engine, the old TV, toothpaste, the computer - all German inventions of the time. I think here more precision is necessary, as his source material clearly shows that the Germans, while not stupid, were less adept at finding their way in the new, industrialised society of the 19th century than the recently immigrated Jews, that had come for the opportunity Prussian-directed Germany gave them in the first place.

Aly Goetz comes up with some interesting theories why the Germans persecuted and annihilated European Jewry. It is a book anyone who seeks explanations for this twentieth century madness should read.

have only read the first 2 chapters, since it is not available yet as an e book (?), great research, Goetz Ali has made it his lifework apparently to write about the third Reich and trying to understand how such atrocities were possible. well done, hope to get the e book soon
