5.0 out of 5 stars Top-notch story 4 May 2012
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This short novel is aimed at children although I found it entertaining. Written in large print it is ideal for youngsters and is advertised as dyslexia friendly. My 8 year old grandaughter who has this problem found it 'fabulous'. No reading difficulties. The story revolves around Billy Watson (known as Dilly). He is struck by a simple wart on his knee he names George. Simple for most people but a stigma for a schoolboy. Hounded by a school colleague (Penny Prosser) and cajoled by his brother Jim, Billy does his best to conceal and explain the plaster he uses on his knee to cover the wart. His teacher Miss Erikson understands and takes him to a healer. The results are humorous and appropriate to the abuse Billy (Dilly) has received. The tribulations that any schoolchild has heaped upon, however trivial, is a major anxiety, especially if called by a derogatory name 'Wartman'. Most of us have had similiar problems on reflection.
Michael Morpurgo has written a short, clearly written in large print, book concerning the unhappiness of a boy and the attempts to overcome this. It is not just a childhood situation as life throws up situations as we get older that we disguise or excuse. Well-written,illustrated and recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive, but funny 9 May 2012
By C. Colley TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Packaged in a brand new cover, Wartman is all about Billy Watson. Billy was nicknamed Dilly by his brother and the name just stuck.
Dilly was always a happy sort of boy, but then a wart appeared on his knee. When the wart appeared, so did the laughing and name-calling and Dilly's life begins to go wrong.
After an unfortunate incident at school, Dilly's teacher saves the day and takes Dilly to see Mr Ben, an old man that provides a cure for his wart, but with funny consequences.
This is one of Michael Morpurgo's simple fiction stories that deals with bullying and unkindness, but with a bit of fun. The story has a good outcome and comes with the message, think twice before being unkind.
The book is aimed at young readers and struggling readers. I also think it is a good book to read aloud so parents and teachers might like to share and discuss it.

This is another Morpurgo book that, having read and enjoyed, I gave to a friend's youngster. All Morpurgo books that I've bought have been good reading.
