Product Description

This spectacular six-part series brings to life the valiant yet doomed attempt by Boudicca, the widowed Queen of the Iceni tribe of East Anglia, to wrest power from the Romans in first-century Britain. Produced by Ruth Boswell (Timeslip, Tightrope, Shadows), Warrior Queen stars Sian Phillips as the fearless Celtic queen, Nigel Hawthorne as Catus Decianus, the rapacious Roman Procurator, and Michael Gothard as Druid priest Volthan.

It is AD61. The Romans rule Britain. Prasutagus, King of the Iceni, is dying. In his will, he bequeaths one half of his kingdom to his two daughters; the other half is to be ceded to the Roman Emperor, Nero. Prasutagus's widow, Queen Boudicca, invites the Roman Procurator, Catus Decianus, to attend his burial. Catus Decianus, however, has no intention of attending 'this flea-bitten king's funeral'; instead, he arrives when it is over. It is an ominous sign...

3.0 out of 5 stars One For the Kiddies 17 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I think I expected too much from this drama and that is my fault. It is, after all, a kiddies tv series from 1978. Therefore it come across as rather tame. Because Sian Phillips played Empress Livia Drusila in 'I Claudius' so wonderfully, I was expecting to see a fabulous wicked and bloodthirsty Boudicca Warrior Queen. It was made for children however, and was shown on children's prime time tv. As far as kids go; it is very good - my grandchildren enjoyed it very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars I waited so long 5 Jan 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
It is many years since I saw this on TV and have waited patiently to see it again. Sian Phillips as always is wonderful. Of course by current standards it is more modest in its production values, but this is more then made up for by the talents of the likes of Nigel Hawthorne and some great early writing. First shown in 1978 it inspired in me two loves, the power of Sian Phillips and the inspiration of Boudicca herself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice that it's available 21 May 2013

Interesting take on the Boudicca story, what little is known of her. Obviously aimed at kids but I enjoyed watching it. Not a high budget production - with a cast of 10s to recreate the battle scenes. But a good quality cast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warrior queen or ham acting at its best 21 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I suppose I was trying to remember this as watched when in first showed on tv. Knowing more and research on finds in the historical context have rendered this series beyond obsolete both in terms of accuracy and acting. I would suppose it was pretty big budget when made but boy is it boring and depressing watching now. If you we're thinking of watching it again then don't do it, I fast forwarded it so many times trying to find good bits that I must have viewed the whole series in the time taking in watching two at normal speed. In all do not try and watch it to remember how good it was.......it isn't
Personal view so make your mind up yourself if you dare lol
