A brilliant book! A great sense of atmosphere, history and adventure and a real page turner from start to finish. Much more than a regular historical fiction! A must read.

For anyone wanting an introduction to one of our greatest Kings (no pun intended), this is the book to read. An excellent fact-based story of Alfred's wilderness years and triumphant return at the Battle of Edington in 878ad with the celtic mystery of the native Ancient Britons included. I live in the Quantocks not far from where this tale takes place so it was doubly interesting for me. A good, enjoyable history novel for teenagers and adults alike.

An excellent read and fine book. Sue Purkiss has produced a real page turner here - great plot and I loved the characters. Just the book to encourage our young readers and it begs for a sequel - I would love to meet up with Fleda again.
