Product Description

Synopsis
There is full-on Space Marine action in the amazing sequel to "Warrior Brood"! The iconic Space Marines blast into action with all guns blazing in CS Goto's latest novel. The sequel to "Warrior Brood" explores the Deathwatch Space Marines and their remit to hunt down the foul alien creatures that besiege mankind from all fronts. Warrior Coven sees the Deathwatch being forced to ally with those they have sworn to destroy. Can they hold their fanatical hatred in check to prevent a bigger evil from entering the universe? This action-packed novel from the author of "Dawn of War" brings the grim darkness of the far-future to life in an epic SF tale with an explosive climax.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well done!, 4 Aug 2006
By Detra Fitch (USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Captain Octavius did such an exceptional performance on the Herodian IV mission, he had become one of the very few Marines to be given the honor of a permanent secondment to the Deathwatch. The captain assembles a new team of battle brothers for a new mission. Though Octavius has already selected a Blood Ravens librarian named Atreus for the team, he is surprised to learn that the Angels Sanguine librarian, Ashok (from the Herodian IV mission), has been called in my one of the lord inquisitors to join the team as well.

This Deathwatch team is to fulfill an ancient pact that had been made between the Ordo Xenos and the eldar aliens. The Eye of Terror is weeping torrents of Chaos into the galaxy. To the naked eye, it resembles a cloud of red mist leaking out of the nebula. The Marines must enter the eldar craftworld of Ulthwé and assist the aliens in dispatching Lelith, the Wych Queen of Strife, before she can complete a daemonic princess's transmigration. This is much easier said than done, however. The darkling wyches who blade dance and spin with breathtaking precision, the darkling raiders, and vicious warp-beasts are only a few of the many forces in which Lelith commands from her arena throne. Captain Octavius and his battle brothers know full well that Chaos minions are not the only form of treachery they must be wary of.

***** An excellent addition to the Deathwatch series. I do not know which story I believe is the best thus far. I found it very interesting to watch warriors from the enemy side team up with the Marines. As the reader, I got to see the fight from the Eldar Warriors' view point, as well as from the Marines'. I could not help but admire a few of them. I hope to see more of them in future W40K novels. Author C.S. Goto has outdone himself! *****

4.0 out of 5 stars More Deathwatch action, 25 Oct 2006
By T. R. Alexander (East Anglia, UK) - See all my reviews

Warrior Coven is the second book in the Deathwatch series and sees a team of the elite alien hunters sent to help the Eldar of Ulthwé repel raids attempted by the Dark Eldar. Captain Octavius and Librarian Ashok from the previous Deathwatch book, Warrior Brood, return but other than that all the major players are new to the series. There are also appearances from a couple of existing characters from the Warhammer 40,000 game in the form of Eldrad Ulthran and the Wych Queen Lelith Hesperax.

I do feel that the C. S. Goto's Deathwatch series is superior to his Dawn of War series but it does suffer from the same lack of knowledge misunderstandings of existing background as his previous books. For example, Warrior Coven features a substantial Dark Eldar colony not only outside Commorragh, the Dark Eldar city within the Webway, but within the Eye of Terror itself and Eldar referring to the Chaos God of pleasure by its human name Slaanesh rather than She Who Thirsts, its eldar name. Along these same lines Goto seems portrays the Dark Eldar as Chaos Eldar, something many Dark Eldar collectors would find rather distasteful.

I do find all of this slightly annoying as C. S. Goto is actually a very good writer able to produce brilliantly evocative and involving fight scenes and getting the personality of his characters just right. I feel that C. S. Goto has the potential to become one of the best writers of Warhammer 40,000 literature if only he could get the existing background right, until then I wouldn't feel comfortable giving him more than four out of five.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Warrior Brood, 14 Mar 2009
By Mr. E. T. M. Macdonald (UK) - See all my reviews

This is a great book for lovers of Space Marines and Eldar. Shows the two fighting together, despite their deep misgivings against the Dark Eldar. A wealth of detail and info on the Eldar craftworld, obviously something CS Goto wished to explore further in Eldar Prophecy. Although some of this book is quite standard 40K fare - eg the being captured and having to fight in a gladiatorial arena, the author has filled the book with detail and a decent plot that will appeal to Eldar and Space Marine fans. There's also some good stuff on the relationship between Dark Eldar and the Chaos Gods, notably Slaanesh.
