This is great. This is music that I have never come across before. This is what sample albums should be about. This even reminds me of (oh dear, showing my age again) that old Island '
Bumpers' sample album - of course, you're not going to like every track, but maybe there'll be something new, some direction that hadn't occurred to you. Well, there certainly is for me in this collection.
Tracks that immediately stood out were '
Hyperthrust by Rustie and
Dead Guitars by Seefeel. In fact, I was so intrigued by 'Dead Guitars' that I did a bit more research and ended up buying the
album.
Overall though, the breadth of musical styles on this sampler is great - from the boppy Hudson Mohawke through to the electro-industrial weirdness of Seefeel, there is an amazing range here to nibble, taste and maybe even digest.
I think it's great that samplers are still being released. I also think it's great that they are, albeit for a short time only, available as free MP3 downloads. And I also think it is wonderful that there are companies like Warp Records around who are prepared to not only publish such experimental music but also make it available in this format.
Just try it - for now, you have nothing to lose but a bit of space on your iPod - and you might gain a whole new area of music to explore.
Thank-you Warp Records!
