Whole New Worlds... 10 Jun 2011

This is great. This is music that I have never come across before. This is what sample albums should be about. This even reminds me of (oh dear, showing my age again) that old Island 'Bumpers' sample album - of course, you're not going to like every track, but maybe there'll be something new, some direction that hadn't occurred to you. Well, there certainly is for me in this collection.

Tracks that immediately stood out were 'Hyperthrust by Rustie and Dead Guitars by Seefeel. In fact, I was so intrigued by 'Dead Guitars' that I did a bit more research and ended up buying the album.

Overall though, the breadth of musical styles on this sampler is great - from the boppy Hudson Mohawke through to the electro-industrial weirdness of Seefeel, there is an amazing range here to nibble, taste and maybe even digest.

I think it's great that samplers are still being released. I also think it's great that they are, albeit for a short time only, available as free MP3 downloads. And I also think it is wonderful that there are companies like Warp Records around who are prepared to not only publish such experimental music but also make it available in this format.

Just try it - for now, you have nothing to lose but a bit of space on your iPod - and you might gain a whole new area of music to explore.

Thank-you Warp Records!
:-)

I love sampler CDs.

Even if it's covering a genre I hate/despise/don't understand, they're irresistible. Doubly so if they're free (and I wouldn't pay more than two iron men for one anyway, given that I'm paying for the label's advertising). Good for Warp that they offer this one for free.

The exhibit under consideration is from a label I'd heard of, although the only artists covered with whom I was already familiar are Flying Lotus and Gonjasufi. Never mind: it was free.

The album isn't a "Best of". In truth, there's no sense of its being an album at all. It's a sampler from a record label who are offering you tracks from their artists in the hope that you'll explore these further. The music isn't necessarily immediately accessible - it depends what you're used to - though I didn't hear anything that I couldn't appreciate and enjoy.

Whether you like it - and whether you want to explore further - depends entirely on you. I like it. Two brothers - the ones who gave it one star reviews and/or deleted it immediately - loathed it. But Justin Bieber it ain't, so I think one star can't be justified :).

Sampler CDs - 20% songs you love. 30% songs you hate. 80% songs you think are interesting.

Rock on.

If you have time for only four songs, start with the Gonjasufi track and listen to what's left.

Blimey...can't believe the negativity here? Really enjoyed this while jogging this morning. Dropped a star purely for Hudson Mohawke as this sounds as if it doesn't belong here. Other entries are of a quality I would expect from such a great label

Too ploddy and dull
Didn't get into this at all. About as exciting as Emmerdale, but won't drag the complaint on too much as it was a free sampler. Just not to my taste, I guess.

What happened?
Warp USED to be the label that was guaranteed quality - LFO, Aphex Twin,Nightmares on Wax, Autechre and even the label's own Warp 10+2: Classics 1989-1992. Read more

Fantastic - and free!
Brilliant sampler from one of the country's most interesting labels. It actually encouraged me to buy an album by one of the featured artists, Seefeel, so it did its job and... Read more

Coo... what's the beef? Free moo-zik and people are moaning? Turn it off if you don't like it - it's not compulsory.

I am overjoyed to find this little sampler. Read more

Why no good tracks to get you to buy
So disappointed, Given one star as it was free but if this is a showcase for warp records then I will steer clear of this label as not one listenable track............Pity!

Surely some mistake.
A sample of what Warp records is all about? Yes, that it may be. A 'best of' what Warp is all about, is certainly is what it is not. Read more
