Product Description

Synopsis
For Iain Madoc it all began when he was eight years old and his father took him out on a boat trip. Something George Madoc saw or heard out on the water that day seemed to change him, and after that it was as if Iain didn't have a real father at all. Only later did Iain come to understand that it had all started long before, when George Madoc had commanded an RAF Air-Sea Rescue boat ferrying SOE agents between the south coast and occupied France. One night in April1944 an operation to bring back a French agent went terribly wrong, and when George finally made it home two months later, he was unable to speak about what had happened. Now, as his mother lies dying, Iain is finally given a clue to unlocking the mystery of what so traumatized his father that he turned away from his own son. The wreck of High Speed Launch 5468 - his father's boat - has been found near the Breton village of St Cyriac, and with it, perhaps, the key to unlocking George Madoc's memories. Desperate to understand, Iain goes to St Cyriac determined to discover the truth. But St Cyriac will not give up its secrets easily. For some people the past is still dangerously alive, and Iain soon finds that his own family may have to pay the price of uncovering it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable, 3 Jun 2009
By Elizabeth Mills (Oxford, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Warning Bell (Hardcover)
I finished this book at 2.00 a.m. in floods of tears. It is a real page turner, and I loved it from beginning to end. It has all the features I enjoy - complicated relationships. A gradually, carefully crafted unfolding of the central plot. An historical dimension, as it's set in modern times, but flashes back to the Second World War very effectively. As all good novels need a love interest, there is the beginning of a good relationship, but no graphic sex. You really COULD give this book to your grandmother for Christmas!

The Warning Bell has a realistic plot line, with war and derring do, prejudice and secrecy, the sea as friend and foe, and goodies and baddies. And in addition Macaulay has drawn some fine characters. Iain is completely believable, as is his wife Chantal and their daughter Kate. And the priest, Father Felix, is a very interesting character.

But most of all I fell for Iain's father, who is truly the hero of the story. I want to go to Brittany and find the village and meet the characters, because I absolutely know I will recognise them all.
