Terminator Salvation is an 'interquel', taking place between the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the appalling Terminator Salvation. The videogame is described as a third person shooter where the player needs to "constantly move, flank, cover and utilize their squad to progress". At best, its a generic entry to the genre. Developers GRIN were also responsible for Wanted: Weapons of Fate, which has similar gameplay elements.

Salvation opens with the war between humans and machines. John Connor reflects on the old days, and the wavering belief that he is humanitys saviour. The massive death tolls mean he is beginning to lose hope. What follows is a journey to restore that faith, by rescuing members of the Resistance and striking at the heart of SkyNet. Information and plot developments are presented through the ramblings of Connor's squad, and radio calls they intercept. 'Cut scenes' are all rendered, which highlight the mediocre in-game visuals. Glitches are everywhere. In addition, the lack of Christian Bale, who refused to lend his name and likeness, doesn't help authenticity.

Connor does battle with SkyNet enemies from the film, as well as Terminators specifically designed for the game. Yet the final amount is still underwhelming. Harvesters feature, but otherwise there isn't much variety, making combat a repetitive slog. A frustrating health system, which recharges at the end of each battle, can only aggravate matters. The entire campaign takes approximately 4 hours to complete. There are no extra features other than the ability to change difficulty settings, so replay value is non-existent. Although a multiplayer mode was originally planned, it was eventually dropped, presumably to release the game on schedule.

Literally the only good thing about this game is it's an easy platinum trophy/ 1000g. Everything else is pretty poor but i will review the game for those that are interested.

You play as John Conner and you're task is to survive and help the Resistance, with the main aim of the game to locate resistance trapped behind enemy lines (basically in a Terminator factory). There are at most 5 weapons and i include fixed MG's and grenades in that so things are limited in that regard. Graphics are about average given how old it is now! Audio is also very poor with "voices" not matching facial movements. Music is the same each and every time you encounter terminators! There are 3 settings for difficulty easy, medium and hard...you mite as well go straight for hard (sure you'll die a good hand full of times) but completing the game on hard will give you all the trophies on offer which will save you from re-doing the story again. At most it took 4-5 hours on hard to complete.

PROS: Easiest 11 Trophies i've ever got

CONS: Everything else...it's a poor game!

VERDICT: Rent if you can, only buy if the price drops below £5 as anything more and you'll have been ripped off.

There's lots of hate circulating for this game and while i can understand that this game has its problems, after playing through it twice, its also easy to see why its fun.
The graphics and sound aren't bad just standard, nothing spectauclar but functional.
This game really picks up in the larger scale battles, which if fought right provide a good sense of excitement, the cover system on the whole is actually pretty cool.
To conclude i must mention the flaws and glitches in this game; however they are mostly ironed out by the fact that you're fighting terminators and skynet as john connor, that makes it all worth it.
In the end a flawed but fun adventure.

Its a movie tie in and so it didn't come as too much of a surprise that there are a lot of areas where this is lacking - the environment won't let you explore and is lifeless with little movement of debris (the cover does get eroded away by the enemy gunfire slowly but not at any great rate) or plants or anything really, the AI of the opponents is a bit lacking, not much variety in weapons or opponents, your allies can seem to take an infinite amount of hits which is a bit silly sometimes but they provide a useful distraction for enemies at times and do take part in defeating them.

Strangely though, I have found it fun to play. I had heard it was easy and short so I put it straight on to hard mode which does make things trickier and lead to a few more deaths purely from not knowing what is coming, so it can provide a challenge.

The game is mostly a 3rd person shooter where you use the cover, pop out and shoot or throw explosives at the bad guys. This is broken up with a few on rails shooter sections where you take down enemies while on a moving vehicle.

The cover system works well and I don't think I've played a game with a better one yet. Cover is vital in hard mode for flanking enemies and getting into good positions to shoot them or distract them so your allies can shoot them. Nicely cinematic in some of the action and quite exciting even if it is very much on rails but then so are most shooters.

If you can pick this up in a bargain bin you could get some decent entertainment from it but I would have been horrified had I paid full price for it. Not necessarily what you would expect from a game for this generation of consolde but there is fun to be had with it as long as you don't scrutinise it too much.
