Product Description

Lollipop Chainsaw is a hack-and-slash, single player Action game in which players battle zombies as never before - in the form of the spirited, chainsaw-wielding, cheerleader heroine, Juliet Starling. The game contains an addictive mixture of mature zombie apocalypse gameplay, juxtaposed with the bubbly actions and attitude of the perky teen heroine. Additional features include, upgradable cheerleading abilities and chainsaws that both serve in combat, over-the-top zombie rock lord bosses, a storyline full of hooks, and a rockin' soundtrack.

So Sweet You Can Just Die

Lollipop Chainsaw is the 'un-deadly' story of sweet and killer zombie-hunter Juliet Starling and her quest to uncover the root of a colossal zombie outbreak. With her wickedly awesome chainsaw in hand, Juliet slices, dices and splits her way through hordes of the undead, but soon realises the horde is only the opening act to a festival of zombie rock lords determined to kill the chainsaw-wielding cheerleader.

Lollipop Chainsaw is being developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, led by celebrated game developer Goichi Suda (aka SUDA 51) and featuring the musical compositions of the renowned Akira Yamaoka. In addition, Hollywood director and writer James Gunn (Super, Slither, Dawn of the Dead, Tromeo and Juliet) has brought his cult humor and edgy storytelling to Lollipop Chainsaw's script.

Gameplay

Lollipop Chainsaw is an action game unlike any other. To combat and kill zombie enemies, players utilise a combination of available attacks. Light attacks, in the form of punches, kicks and the like can be used in taking on small numbers of enemies, or to maneuver enemies into the most convenient position when faced with a numerical disadvantage. Stronger attacks against single or multiple enemies are unleashed using Juliet's devastating chainsaw. Even stronger advanced attacks are possible by filling up Juliet's star meter. The decapitated, but quite alive severed head of Juilet's boyfriend Nick can be used in attacks as well, and success in attacks allows for the upgrade of Juliet's chainsaw.

Key Game Features

  • A New Kind of Killer Heroine - Juliet Starling is an 18-year-old student with a dark secret - zombie-hunting with a killer chainsaw in hand. Juliet must balance the drama of high school while carrying out her zombie-hunting lineage.
  • Gameplay Design - Celebrated game developer SUDA 51 brings his unique creative style and vision to the gameplay design, taking players through a wild ride of zombies, chainsaws, and rainbows.
  • Edgy Storyline - Through an adapted script by James Gunn, Juliet must uncover the root of a colossal zombie outbreak at her school, San Romero High, but soon realises the horde isn't quite what it seems and is targeting her more than most.
  • Combat/Weapons - Players will hone their cheerleading acrobatics and chainsaw skills to string together devastating combo moves, taking out hordes of the undead.
  • Zombie Rock Lords - San Romero High's zombie jocks and undead faculty are the least of Juliet's concerns when she soon realises that she faces a bigger challenge, zombie rock lords that add a new beat' to SUDA 51's over-the-top boss battles.
  • Head Bangin' Music - With original music created by popular video game composer Akira Yamaoka (best known for the Silent Hill series) and other notable artists, Lollipop Chainsaw features a soundtrack that's to die for. In addition to original music, Juliet's playlist will also include familiar songs from various musical genres.

This is a solid game start to finish. The story isn't made out to be overly serious, something which many modern games are missing! The humor contains many pop-culture references (Amazon wishlist is even mentioned in the game!), it is one of the few comedy games out at the minute.
What I loved most about this game is the soundtrack, classic tunes such as 'You Spin Me Right Round' are heard. All the music accompanies hilarious action sequences and is very fitting.

If your a fan of zombie games, Shadows of the Damned or No More Heroes, then definitely pick this up! I'm on my second play-through at the moment and there are plenty of special items and extras to collect and achieve, so it has plenty of replay value. Overall Lollipop Chainsaw is the perfect blend of video game direction from the East and West, and I enjoyed it very much.

I see a lot of reviews, amateur and professional, that are very sniffy about Lollipop Chainsaw (not on Amazon though - a discerning bunch of gamers!). No, it's not Ico and neither is it a feminist treatise, but you must have known that coming in: I mean, just look at the cover! However, don't be fooled; the script and design of the game is excellent.

** NOTE THE 18 RATING **.

This is not a game for minors - the gore is cartoonish and the dark elements are caricatures, but the language is Grade A ripe. If you are mature/old enough to not be offended by naughty words, you will find the dialogue knowing and genuinely funny. As a parent, you probably shouldn't be buying this for under-age kids.

Lollipop Chainsaw is basically a hack 'n' slash rom-zom-com. There are some rhythm and platformer minigames within as well. If you want to collect all the extras like special moves, power-ups, concept art, music and er... costumes... then you can keep coming back for more, although the appeal is somewhat limited.

Personally, I quite like linear games; I don't spend a lot of time gaming, so like to know I'm progressing rather than wandering aimlessly in a sandbox. Lollipop Chainsaw is fairly short and relatively simple, the character design and music are very good and overall, I kept playing "just one more try" way past my bedtime. I haven't done that in a long time.

Like the best grindhouse & exploitation movies, it may seem fluffy and inconsequential at first blush, but a lot of work and love has gone into this game and the cut scenes and dialogue are particularly excellent. Give the game a chance and it will charm you. In truth, there's not a lot of repeat play in the game, which is what loses it one star. My advice is, if you're interested in the game, buy a disc, play it and then trade it in/sell it on instead of getting a download version.

To start... Ignore IGN's review of this game at all costs. It's bogus and offensive. it receives a 5.0 score and a rating of Mediocre. The review states that if you play this you are immature, and a misogynist.
The gameplay is simple and brilliant, less action adventure more hack & slash. the graphics are great, not perfect, but they take the 30fps that consoles can reach and use its full potential. your protagonist Juliet Starling is cute, funny and stereotypical. This game cannot be taken seriously and there is a ton of comic relief, mainly coming from your decapitated boyfriend. all characters have a great personality, even the Zombie bosses come up with some good lines!
The story is short, maybe around 8 hours on the hardest difficulty, but with the increase in difficulty comes a great challenge. there is also the opportunity to replay stages to place yourself on world leaderboards. There will be DLC in the future, what of? no-body knows. but there is already plenty to collect in the game as well as the RPG element of building Juliet up to be one bad-ass cheerleader.
