Its simple Garnett Mimms had a talent that should have propelled him to the highest levels of stardom , that it didnt is a complete mystery.This album is as good a soul album as i have heard in 30 years of collecting music,the vocals are awesome ,arrangements memorable ."Cry baby" and "it was easier to hurt her" have a emotion few other soul singers could ever get across,theres a vunribility to Mimms vocals that make them all the more emotional.

This album first appeared on vinyl in 1984. I bought it shortly afterwards, and it formed a large part of the soundtrack to the summer of 1985 for me and my friends. As recent converts to 60's soul, we'd listened to Motown, Otis, Sam Cooke and Aretha, but unearthing something as wonderful and unexpected as this was a particular joy.
Garnet Mimms has one of the warmest and most expressive voices of any soul singer, and it is unfathomable why he was not a major success in the mid- to late-60's. On this album, the arrangements are beautifully sympathetic, whether on the uptempo "As Long As I Have You" or the mournful "Just A Matter of Time". The sound has the delicacy and gospel feel of the Impressions, the depth and gutsiness of classic Atlantic soul, and the sophistication of Jackie Wilson's late 60's output. On the uptempo songs, Garnet displays some similarity to Jackie, but his stately way with a ballad is more reminiscent of the great Solomon Burke.
While the first side (in old money) up to track 8 is merely very good (apart from the obligatory clunker "A Little Bit Of Soap"), the final eight tracks are all killers, from "It Was Easier To Hurt Her" to "My Baby". Each and every one of these songs ought to be regarded as a soul classic, but inexplicably they're not. Perhaps the sound was too overtly gospel-influenced for the period, and certainly the likes of "My Baby", "For Your Precious Love" and "Just A Matter Of Time" have very obviously arrived straight from church.
The later recordings are from 1966, and display Garnet in noticeably more assured form than the earlier tracks, which are a little more rough-hewn. The fantastic arrangements also step up a level or two, with a plush, slightly slicker sound, which adds weight to the stunning vocal performances. Listen to the joyous vocal, tricksy guitar lines and deep-dish horn parts on "That Goes To Show You", a particular fave.
The music on this album should be an essential part of any serious soul fan's collection. Garnet Mimms' best moments (and there are at least a dozen of them here) rank with the very best 60's soul. This is the kind of music which will keep you company for the rest of your life.

There are loads of great Soul singers, few if any rank alongside this guy.
A master of the slow ballad and the uptempo floor shaker, Mimms has it all, this album is a great place to start and to truly wonder at his majesty, I cannot rate him high enough.
