Book Description

14 Aug 2012 Warlord of Mars
John Carter disappeared from Mars as mysteriously as he arrived. Days before he did, an unknown assassin murdered the guardian of the Red Planet's life support system. Carter, himself, is implicated in the horrific crime, and it's up to his princess, Dejah Thoris, to clear his name. That would be tough enough, but someone is trying to kill Dejah, too! With enemies all around her, both seen and unseen, she'll need all the help she can get. Prepare for a murder mystery of Barsoomian proportions in the Warlord of Mars Volume 2 TP, collecting issues #10-18 of the series, along with a complete cover gallery.

More About the Author

Arvid Nelson worked on a couple of films after college, ranging from Woody Allen's Small Time Crooks to Troma Productions' The Toxic Avenger Part IV. As much as he enjoyed fetching coffee and sleeping in rat-infested warehouses, he decided to drop out and write comics, and he hasn't looked back.

Ten years later, he's finally delivered the coup de grâce to Rex Mundi, his first published work, as well as Zero Killer, another comic he's been working on for a Really Long Time. He's written for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Dynamite Entertainment.

Arvid lives in Northampton, Massachusetts, with a loving wife and a large television. He enjoys lifting weights and writing about himself in the third person. His next big project is a young adult fantasy novel based on his love of Scandinavian and Celtic mythology, and heavy metal music. You can get in touch with him at arvidland.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good 12 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read some warlord of mars books, and felt they were mostly about showing half-naked women. But the story in these books is very good and I had a hard time putting down the books. The artwork is good, but not the absolut best I've seen.
Shows many more adventures John Carter had on Mars, and even a few other places.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best John Carter Comic Ever 26 Feb 2013
By Stephen V. Kempton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
John Carter has a rich history of attempts in comics. Dell, DC, Marvel and Dark Horse have all made noble attemps at the character over the years and I own them all. But Dynamite's version is my favorite. Dynamite is currently doing about 3 John Carter books a month. This book Warlord Of Mars,a Dejah Thoris ongoing and a string of rotating mini-series. This book is the lead title tasked with adapting the Edgar Rice Bourroughs novels along with some expansion stories.

This volume priced at $24.99 might seem high but it does reprint 9 issues of the comic compared to some TPB which contain 4 or 5 issues worth of material. They also include all three cover versions. The Stephen Sandowski and Lucio Parrillo covers are really nice but the Joe Jusko paintings are stunning and worth the price for them alone.

This volume includes the three part Heretic Of Mars which is a bridging story which takes place between the first two Mars novels when John Carter has returned to Earth. As such John is not in this story. The second story is a six part adaptation of the 2nd ERB novel Gods Of Mars. The fact that it ends in clff hanger may puzzle some readers but this comes directly from the novel.

Arvid Nelson who has been doing nice work on the Kull mini-series at Dark Horse is the writer. Arvid seems very knowledgeable in his source material. He has has expanded the story in places and left out things he did not think worked, like John not knowing his own son which took place for many chapters in the novel. But over all a very faithful adaptation.

The first 3 part story has great art by Stephen Sadowski who did excellent work on the early Geoff Johns Justice Society comics. The six part story has art by Edgar Salazar who broke in to comics more recently doing some of Alex Ross Project Superpowers spin-offs. I prefer the polished look of Sandowski but Salazar art is also quite nice. Salazar style is more fine lined and scratchy. Salazar has a face here and there that looks a little wonky but overall nice work.

Highly Recommened!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dynamite is consistent 11 Dec 2012

Dynamite Entertainment lives up to their name. Their line of Mars books definitely speak to the authors & artists love of their work and is a fitting tribute to Edgar Rice Burroughs. Barsoom comes alive at their hands.
