You've been scouring reviews for sandwich toasters looking for one that is easy to clean and built to last haven't you? Well you need look no further because you've found what you were looking for. There is a Cuisinart model that looks identical; I believe Cuisinart are a sister company of Waring so it's more than likely just been re-branded. I bought the Waring model from Argos (£39.99) after returning a really disappointing Breville toaster.
Okay you take it out of the box and you think, "damn that looks well made".
You will twiddle with the temperature control knob and think "hmmmm, that feels loose". Don't worry, it isn't it's just very easy to turn.
You'll wash the plates and put it back together (easy to do) then offer the bread up to the plates to see how it fits and then your face will drop. The plates are square and your bread will probably be rectangular in shape. That means that when you put your sandwich together in the toaster the back and front edges will seal the bread, but because the plates are square the bread will not fully reach the left and right sides of the plates so it will not be properly sealed. I don't know why this is but in reality it doesn't much matter. The two narrow sides of the bread do get sealed to a certain extent and any leakage tends to fill the space at the sides. If you want a toastie where you can pick it up and eat it then you may be a bit disappointed. If you don't mind using a knife and fork then it won't bother you a bit. In any case the toasties will come out nuclear-hot so personally the last thing I'd want to be doing is picking one up anyway.
If you go a bit mad with the filling and overfill the sandwich to the extent that the filling leaks from the sides of the machine then fear not - the plates are wider than the machine itself so any leaks drip from the plates to the work surface (they do not dribble down the side of the machine).
There are some reviewers that say that the Cuisinart model has a weak handle and it has broken off - I cannot speak for that model but the Waring one seems fine; just close the lid slowly and gently squeeze the handle from both sides. It takes no effort at all so I can't see it breaking.
We're really happy with the toaster and would recommend it highly. Would make an excellent present too.
EDIT: If you're reading this between the 2nd & 15th May 2012 these sandwich toasters are on offer at Macro for £24.99 plus VAT (£30). Get em while they're hot! :)
