Do you remember the old pulp magazines?
The pulps had lurid covers decorated with dinosaurs, spaceships, buxom blonds and titles like AMAZING STORIES, WEIRD TALES, AIR ACES. Sold in grocery stores during the Great Depression, the pulps provided adolescent escape for only a dime. Critics ridiculed the pulps as poop.
This adolescent tale takes us to a CIA rocket base buried in the Welsh countryside. The dark hero schooled in voodoo from a childhood in Haiti must find a way to enlist the "Petro"(oil...BP scandal?) gods to rescue his nerd friend from the rocket base housing the appropriately named SPECTRE ICBM missile. The SPECTRE is the high tech hope of the West( a rocket light years ahead of Soviet ICBMs)and makes the UK a near vassal state to the USA. The Soviets are rightly afraid and their atheistic state must turn to the occult to stop SPECTRE.
Like the pulps of yore the dialogue is corny...
...he saw the tall man's face, features that stretched the membrane of skin so that the skin bulged through-the face of DEATH!...skeletal fingers outstretched...page 190
The plot is disjointed with subplots that never relate to the story...rabbit trails to hell in a sense. The book passed my commute test so I gave it three stars. I was in beautiful Cyprus and so did not need respite from my rail commute, but the book did keep me absorbed in a critical way.
The unusual genre mixing of the book combining tech with the occult succeeded in making a bad book mediocre. The tech/occult genre actually made the movie EVENT HORIZON good. As a Christian, I should not be surprised by the evil occult theme of this book since it echoes the condition of the world. The West being as evil as anyone else... see 1 John 5:19.The popular fascination we see today with evil and the occult always puzzles me since it ignores God as do the characters in this book. What kind of blinders are we wearing when we ignore God?
An interesting sidelight to this book is the history of psychic research done by SRI and the CIA during the eighties and the involvement of Stalin in telekinesis/ PK experiments. Maybe the plot is uncomfortably true!
Warhead-a pulp story that got expanded into a book. The lurid pulp-like cover shows a shrunken head pierced with a SPECTRE missile. There is no grey matter on the tip of the SPECTRE...draw your own conclusions.
