Although this won't give you an army or a playable set, it allows you the chance to see if you can cope with painting miniature models.

The set includes more than enough paint for the 5 models supplied, and enough for further use should you decide that the Warhammer series is for you.

The paints are very good quality, my abilities are amateurish to say the least, yet the finished results look fantastic :) Even if you don't expand your kit, it's a nice display set and is a fun way of practicing your painting skills.

Great Starter Kit! 22 Dec 2010

This is a great starter kit for all new or returning Warhammer fans! The paints are excellent quality and it is a great deal provided that these paints bought individually are $3.70 retail. They will paint the Ultramarine theme no problem and come with a set of tester figurines to work with.

More experienced players be forewarned however. The figurines that come with the set are the cheapest quality Warhammer things and are of glueless construction (no customizability here folks!). Also, if you use primer with acetone (the standard Warhammer one has acetone which eats cheaper quality plastic) it WILL gum up these figurines. The undercoat black pot solves this, but these models are not meant to be done further than average quality builds.

Will definitely buy again for the paint value though as these are my standard paint theme!

A great set for those looking to get their feet wet. 5 Dec 2011

I was really on the fence about Warhammer 40K... it looked like a lot of fun, but the hobby side of of it had me a little worried. Thus I bought this little kit first to see if miniature building and painting was for me.

First and foremomst, the included paints won't allow you to paint the models you see on the box. If you look closely you'll see a little bit of green paint on one guy's helmet. Is this a big deal? Not to me, but you think they wouldn't have shown something the kit isn't capable of reproducing.

But what it can produce is actually very nice. The marines come in three seperate pieces and a base they fit onto. They are simple enough that you don't need any instructions to put them together but they give them to you anyway. The kit also contains step by step instructions on how to paint your miniatures. Will this turn a newbie into Pablo Picasso? Probably not if my experince was any indication, but it is helpful.

On to the paints. After some searching online I found out you should water the paints down a bit to get them to go on more smoothly. After doing so I found the were easy to work with and easy to clean up since they are water based. The little containers look like they wont go far, but they were more than sufficent to paint the included miniatures. By watering them down a little and not globbing paint everywhere these will last you a long time.(On a side note I started paint my own army and there will easily be enough for them as well)

I'm not a professional so the included detail brush was more than sufficent to paint the models. Any lacking was due to my own inexperince and not the quality of the tools I was using. I do recommend getting a cheap flat brush for quickly painting large swatches of your undercoat and base color.

As I mentioned previously I've started my own army *For the greater good!* and having this kit was invaluable. It gave me a lot of useful, basic colors for a good price and let me expirement with my technique and sharpen a few skills before starting in on my actual army. Several of my friends are getting into the hobby as well and they are all limiting themselves to just one or two colors whereas I have a plethora of painting options available to me since I got the kit. Even if I never went forward with other Warhammer products this was a fun little project for my evenings after the kid went to bed and the wife was scrap booking.

*PS This kit also includes a Citadel Wash. (sort of a watered down ink) Just splash a little on with your brush and it will bring lots of little details. It's so easy to use and the results are so major you could swear the stuff was made by little fairies in a tree somewhere!
