Product Description

When an old university friend contacts Jeff Barber, Jeff can hardly suspect the journey he is about to embark upon will take him into the heart of an international health crisis, where he is hunted by the police as a murder suspect and the food manufacturer because he is the only one who knows the truth about their deadly product. Jeff must risk his life to find the cause of the disease and save the millions dying worldwide, including the two children of his new-found partner.

WAR OF NUTRITION, John Beresford's first eco-thriller, is a timely and edgy story of how one driven industrialist's well-intended vision to feed the world entirely by GM food becomes a nightmare when the "magic ingredient" that he creates turns out to be a killer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and topical thriller 18 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a fascinating book - a compelling story about what might happen if companies can get away with excessive manipulation of the food we eat.
It's clear that the book was written a few years ago, with many references to chat rooms (doesn't everyone use Facebook these days?), but that doesn't detract from a page-turning story that builds and builds. Actually, given that it was probably written a few years ago, credit has to go to John Beresford for hitting a topic that is still so relevant today.
The author does not pull any punches at the end. I'd love to describe what I mean by that in more detail, but I really can't spoil it for you. :-)
Worth a read.

I must admit that I did struggle getting through chapter one where many of the main themes and characters are introduced - but after that I could not put the book down. I found the characters well drawn and the plot intersting and very plausable. Given all the business pressures it must be hrd not to relase something too soon and with al thes risks so celarly laid down in this book. Certainly a strong first book from John Beresford and I can't wait for his next one - assuming there is a next one on the stocks already John.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner 21 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
John Beresford's first novel is about a new product that's added to foods, intended to help feed the world. But it gets released too early and it's proving to be a killer. Jeff Barber's friend works for the lab and draws Jeff into the secret. When his friend is killed and Jeff's ex-wife is too, Jeff has to go on the run. His 16 year old daughter is kidnapped and his shrink-turned-friend get drawn into the situation. The only other scientist that can help throws his lot in with them and the race to find a cure is on.

Running through the plot is a bi-continental love story which blossomed over the internet as so many these days do.

The story is fast paced and just when you think things can't get any worse, they do and you find yourself wondering how on earth they're going to get out of the mess they're in. I also enjoyed the IRC chat room sub plot since it was a large part of my early internet life. I too have made a lot of friends over the chat rooms and I identify with it.

Ok, honesty time. I know the author and we met and made friends through a chat room in the late 90s. That's full disclosure but I'd recommend the book even if I didn't know the author personally! It keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next and that's the true test!
